"This was the drug of choice for Erythropoietic Protoporphyria (EPP). It was discontinued because it also contained toluene, which causes liver failure and death. I was taking this, and it did prolong my ability of sun exposure, yet it also caused my liver function levels to skyrocket, making me very sick."

"I have erythropoietic protoporphyria. Solatene was prescribed to me in 1979 to take ten pills daily. It caused the palms of my hands to turn orangish-yellow, and I was able to stay in the sunlight for longer periods of time. After a few years, my liver function levels skyrocketed, and I retained fluid with rapid weight gain. I felt very sick. When I opened a new bottle of Solatene, it stank of toluene. The bottle was not expired, and I had my physician smell it. My medical center filed a formal complaint against Roche Pharmaceuticals because of the toluene being added to medications. I am the reason why Solatene was discontinued."
