Benzethonium chloride topical for Minor Cuts "Never use for burns. I had a fairly bad burn on my hand, popped the blister, and applied. At first, it was fine, and after almost 3 days, my wound got very red and swollen around the edge. I removed it, and my skin around the edge died and pulled off. My hand got very swollen and painful and oozed clear liquid and took a while to heal. Use proper burn treatment. I thought it would protect from infection, but it seals it in and keeps it too moist to heal and can make your tissue die and come off. It is great for scrapes, it protects from clothes and keeps it from getting irritated. I used it on my hand burn because I wear gloves, and it did protect it but sealed in too much moisture and hindered healing."

For Minor Cuts "I used a petrolatum jelly product containing benzethonium chloride called Bag Balm on my lips nightly for several months. It works to soften and prevent chapped lips. In the past week, I noted my lips were feeling quite numb and tingly all the time. I have stopped use, but the numbness is persisting, hopefully, it will lessen over time. I don't have sensitive skin or a history of allergies or other conditions that might cause lip numbness."

For Scrapes "I usually use saline wound wash for cleansing affected areas, but accidentally grabbed a canister off the shelf that looked just like it and in the same row as the saline wound wash. I generally saturate gauze pads with the product, cover the affected area, and tape it on with paper tape. After some time, I felt uncomfortable warmth in the area and removed the gauze pads. There was a distinctive bright red area where the gauze pads had been that was swollen, blistered, painful, and irritated. I then realized I had picked a different product and was having an allergic reaction. The takeaway is that this product is intended to be used differently than saline wound wash. Not intended to be put on gauze pads taped to your skin. Rather wiped on affected skin and dried to form a protective barrier. Painful lesson learned."

Benzethonium chloride topical "DO NOT use on a deep wound. Please. I made the mistake of putting it over a deep laceration on my arm, and it is burning severely. The bottle says minor scrapes and cuts. And it means it!!"
