A comprehensive metabolic panel
(CMP) is a group of blood tests. These tests show how well your kidneys and liver work. They also show the levels of glucose (sugar), proteins, and electrolytes in your blood. A CMP is often done when you have a physical exam. It may also be done to help diagnose a health condition if you have been ill.
How to get ready for the test:
Healthcare providers may tell you not to eat or drink anything, except water, 10 to 12 hours before the test. Several medicines can affect the results of your CMP test. Ask your healthcare provider if you should wait to take your medicines until after your blood is drawn. Wear a short-sleeved or loose shirt on the day of the test. This will make it easier to draw your blood.
What you need to know about your test results:
Your healthcare provider will explain what your test results mean for you. You may need to return for more blood tests if your results are abnormal.
