Ambroxol Levels and Effects while Breastfeeding

Summary of Use during Lactation

Ambroxol is not approved for marketing in the United States by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration but is available in other countries. No information is available on the use of ambroxol during breastfeeding. Because it is about 90% protein bound, the amounts in milk are likely to be low. If a mother requires ambroxol, it is not a reason to discontinue breastfeeding; however, an alternate drug may be preferred, especially while nursing a newborn or preterm infant.
