Adrenal cortical steroids
Adrenal cortical steroids or corticosteroids are hormones synthesized by the adrenal cortex. There are two types of corticosteroids, glucocorticoids and mineralocorticoids. Glucocorticoids e.g. cortisol and cortisone, are essential for the utilization of carbohydrate, fat and protein by the body and for normal response to stress. Naturally occurring and synthetic glucocorticoids have very powerful anti-inflammatory effects and are used to treat conditions that involve inflammation. They also decrease the body's immune response. Mineralocorticoids e.g. aldosterone are necessary for regulation of salt and water in the body.
