"I mean a lot of people on here are saying it didn’t work that’s probably because you have a different strain of bacteria from your UTI. It’s a guess & checking game until your urine culture comes back. Yep every two months I get a freaking UTI. I have one now:)) and am on bactrim I think it’s my second time. First time worked now I think I have a different strain. If you don’t eat yogurt before you take it prepare for extreme nausea and feeling like you’re on a horrible drug. Literally makes my eyes dilate. I feel high and nauseous. Taking a drug this strong especially for first guess diagnosis of strains is so idiotic. Refuse if your doctor prescribes it as a first guess. Don’t put your body through that unnecessarily. Seriously."

"Took one dose of Bactrim for my UTI within 20 minutes I felt really itchy. About an hour later my chest became really tight so I went to urgent care. I felt so sick I couldn’t walk. I fell down on the sidewalk throwing up on my way into the building. It caused severe vomiting and diarrhea. My heart rate was 120 and I had a fever. I ending up having to get an IV and finally felt okay enough after many hours at the hospital. I will absolutely never take this medication again."

"I’m a clean person, but I know that if I go on long road trips and hold my urine, I will get a u.t.i. I came back from the mountains, 2 hour drive and soon after I started feeling The Pain that goes along with it. I went to the dr, was given Bactrim 160/800 one tablet 2 x a day. I never saw an improvement. I went to a different doctor four days later and was given cipro 500 for 14 days. Although I felt relief, along with Trader Joe’s pure cranberry juice, I never felt better. Here I am today with a sudden UTI"

"I was prescribed Bactrim for a bladder infection/UTI. Took only 1 pill and felt jittery and light headed about 30 minutes after taking. Then began to feel slightly itchy and by the night time my skin felt like it was burning, along with splitting headache, shooting pain in my neck and insomnia, unable to sleep, complete brain fog and anxiety. Just from one dose, I didn't take anymore and 5 days later still having splitting headache and random pains through body. I would not recommend and ask doctor for alternative to Bactrim."

"I was prescribed Bactrim for a UTI i and after one dose I immediately developed a splitting headache followed later by weakness, body aches, chills, fever, slight nausea, cough and sore throat. I feel as if I have the flu. I suppose the medication did do what it was supposed to do because the UTI feels as if it's almost completely gone (I'm sure it isn't but at least it doesn't hurt). I will say I don't think the side effects are worth it. I'm in a lot of pain and discomfort and I think I'll be going to the emergency room just to be on the safe side."

"I've had Bactrim three years ago for a UTI too, never had any side effects, I've tried it this week again and for the same reason because I didn't wanted to try macrobid as I had a bad experience, but not even close to what this stuff did to me. As soon I took the drug my vagina started to itch so bad, I thought it was a yeast infection or something, then my vagina got so swollen I couldn't explain. I took only two doses and stopped, next day I was in horrible pain went to three drs to finally get a gyno to checked me he was horrified said I had a wound in my vulva, gave me some stuff that is finally giving me relief, also got my tongue so sore I can't barely eat, and the Drs doesn't care, my scalp is so sensitive I was about to call an ambulance when I got out of the shower my head felt on fire. I'm beyond traumatized after this experience and praying to God I don't have any other problems with this drug. Could this be a Fixed drug eruption?"

"I took bactrim 500mg tablets twice a day for 4 days and felt fine. Day 5...not so much. I got extremely dizzy and super anxious about literally nothing. Don't tell my doctor but I'm done taking them. Ha. Not really worth it. I only have 1.5 days left so MAYBE I'll take it right before bed, but we'll see..... I'm not giving it one star because my symptoms did improve."

"First time prescribed Bactrim for mild UTI. Second day I had flu like symptoms. After day 4 I was feeling so poorly I went to ER where I was told just flu and to rest and to finish Bactrim so it will clear up UTI. Day 5 fever of 105, rushed to hospital where I passed out. Completely dehydrated and organs where showing signs of sepsis. I was in ICU unit for 3 days. The diagnosis was “allergy to sulfa”. However, that’s not really an allergic response. I think it causes the body to dehydrate faster than normal, and my actual problem was intense dehydration. Bactrim was banned in UK after a number people died. I’ll never take it again."

"Please make sure you are not allergic to this drug. I had no idea I was and ended up with horrible allergic reactions. Shortness of breath, heavy chest, rapid pulse-it was at 120 beats per minute for 2 days straight, now it comes and goes. It has been 4 days and I am not better. I really have felt like an anxiety or panic attack is happening all the time. "

"Was prescribed Bactrim for a UTI. Terrible side effects!! I thought I had caught the flu but when I went into the doctor, she said it was just a reaction to Bactrim. Fever (super uncomfortable, sweating and chills), body/joint aches and pains, extreme fatigue. Felt so sick and run down I didn’t want to get out of bed. The day after my last dose, I developed a bright red rash everywhere, which felt like it burned and itched. I had the worst week ever with this drug."

"Went to emergency room after feeling like I needed to urinate constantly and having extreme tenderness is lower abdomen. No pain with urination. Was started on bactrim on Monday evening. 1 pill 2x daily. As of Wed morning my discomfort alleviated significantly. I've had very few side effects, headache seemed to be the most prevalent and was fixed with 800mg ibuprofen. I would definitely recommend taking after eating and drinking large amounts of water. I'm not disappointed in this medicine at all."

"I’m a 20 year old female with a history of gastrointestinal issues. I was worried about taking this drug because of all of the negative reviews, but I had no problem with it. Took it for three days, experienced mild nausea and headaches, but my UTI symptoms were gone by day two. I also take 10mg of amitriptyline daily and was worried about using them together, but the side effects didn’t disrupt my schedule at all. Every time I took a pill I drank a whole bottle of water (16oz) and ate a full meal. I think that is the most important part, because when I had a light meal , I did experience some stomach pain, but nothing severe. Also I was very gassy, but that wasn’t really an issue, LOL. I’d recommend Bactrim."

"Worked very well. By the second-third pill it was feeling better. But Doctor gave me the DS 2x a day and I think its a bit much. By 4th day I felt really horrible. Tired, foggy headed, and lethargic towards the evening. Not going to take anymore pills. Did clear up the issue tho!"

"If you read one review, read mine. I am very angered by all of the scare mongering about this drug. I've taken bactrim, off and on, for decades, to treat a UTI, and I've never had any bad effects from it. In fact, Bactrim literally KNOCKS OUT your UTI symptoms - namely that horrid pain/pressure you feel in your lower belly, usually within 24 hours of taking it. It works a charm. I would not keep taking this drug if it had bad effects. So my advice to you is to ignore all the bad reviews on here. This drug, at worst, might make you feel a bit nauseaous, but I honestly can't think of any other bad effects from it. Don't and suffer the discomfort of a UTI when this medication will knock out your infection quick. Trust me on this. Take the tablets."

"This is an awful medication and I recommend it to anyone. Went to the ER for stomach pain to find out I had a bad UTI. Took 1 pill that the doc gave me and was completely fine. Took the next pill 12 hours later, with some saltine crackers and a bottle of water. 4 hours later, I was shakey, nauseated thought I was going to throw up, my heart rate sped up, I had a fever (did go down with ibuprofun), had a minor rash on my cheeks, headache. Now marks 6 hours after taking it. laying down with towel over head, took benedryl to help with rash. Nausea has eased some, heating pad helps, rash is not as red. Going back to ER tomorrow for a different medicine. I'd rather take Amoxicilian, never have any reactions with that."

"I was prescribed Bactrim for a UTI. Everything was going well on day 1-2, on day 3, mid day, I began with chest tightness, noticed difference in my breathing. Felt as though the end of my lungs/rib area was extremely sore. It sent me to the ER as I was uncertain what could be causing it. CT scans, tests, and 3,000 out of pocket later, no results showed. Which I'm thankful! they eventually chalked it up to the medication. I immediately stopped it and went back to normal after a few days. Weird stuff! I gave it 5 out of 10 because although it was only three days, the bactrim cleared up whatever it was! Potent stuff"

"I've been taking bactrim since Friday it's now Sunday. My doctor told me it's a urinary tract infection but only symptoms I'm having is the urge to pee with little urine. Vaginal itching that comes and go with discharge. I'm ready to stop the medicine but I know I can't. I've missed two doses because the side effects are me feeling dizzy feeling nausea a bad headache and lost of appetite. I don't know what to do I feel like if I stop taking it for a possible UTI it won't go away . But I don't feel it's a UTI cuz I'm not having burning when I pee only after I pee I have itchy feeling that I want to scratch with tissue but I know I can't do that either. I really need help and I hope someone see this that can give me honest answers .. I've been to the health unit and two hospitals they've all gave different results .."

"I shared my IBS symptoms with my primary care and she put me on Bactrim. This medication turned my intestines into an explosive, uncontrollable nightmare. I stopped taking this medication because I cannot even leave the house. I have to wear diapers 24/7 and now I’m waiting on another GI specialist appointment. This medication is nothing but poison. Obviously it has something to do with allergies to sulfate drugs but my pcp , didn’t review my records well enough to know that I cannot take sulfate drugs. I keep good medical records for myself however it slipped by me as well."

"I took the full course seemed fine. The next day I was rushed to a hospital 2 1/2 hours away from my town because no hospital in the cities near mine would take me. I had Steven-Johnson’s Syndrome and was in the hospital for a week with severe problems with every mucus membrane on my body. Also, can’t have MSG and Hydrogenated Soy Protein. There are other antibiotic allergies and sensitivities in my family."

"I often suffer from UTI. And Bactrim forte is the antibiotic that I usually use to treat them. The only side effect that I have noticed is headache, with a little nausea and dizziness. I also take Ultra levure with antibiotics, to avoid a yeast infection."

"I've taken this medication for both skin infections and (most recently) for a UTI. And it has now sent me to the hospital...for mental health. EXTREME anxiety to say the least. Pain in my sides, chest, shortness of breath, tremors all over my body. Felt like I was dying. Insisted doctors check my liver and kidneys for shutdown. Didn't eat a meal for a week (did try to at least eat a yogurt or 2 but that's all I could stomach) I was hospital-free for over a year...which is also the last time I took this med. If you have ANY history of mental health issues AVOID THIS DRUG!! I gave it a 2 because it DID clear up the infections. But was NOT worth the hospital copays, loss of work, etc!"

"I went to CVS MinuteClinic for symptoms of a UTI. I was prescribed Bactrim for two times a day for three days. Within an hour of taking the first pill, I had horrible aching back pain around the area of my kidneys. Upon waking up, my whole body felt sore especially my legs. The same symptoms have persisted throughout the time I’ve taken the medication. I take my last pill in the morning. (This medication also makes you have insomnia so I'm up at 3AM). Luckily I only have to take 3 days worth of it or else I would have thrown it out. Medication also cleared up my UTI. So that’s one positive in a pool of negatives."
