Prednisolone Injection Indications

For use as an aid in the treatment of primary ketosis in dairy cattle and rheumatoid arthritis, bursitis, and other joint inflammatory conditions in cattle, horses and dogs. Prednisolone is also indicated in dogs in conjunction with antibacterial agents when appropriate, to relieve inflammatory conditions of the skin and ear and as supportive therapy during post-operative stress conditions.

Prednisolone Injection Dosage And Administration

BOVINE KETOSIS: The usual intramuscular dose of prednisolone ranges from 100 to 200 mg according to the intensity of ketosuria and the weight of the animal. Recovery by a single administration of prednisolone is to be expected in most cases; however, a small percentage of animals may need additional treatments.

HORSES AND CATTLE: For intra-articular administration, in cases of rheumatoid arthritis, inflammatory joint conditions involving ligaments, and in bursitis, 40 to 80 mg of prednisolone should be injected, repeating injections, if necessary, at 48 and 96 hours. It is recommended that a quantity of synovial fluid be withdrawn equivalent to the amount of PREDNISOLONE to be injected. For treatment of the same conditions, the intramuscular route may be selected. Deep intramuscular administration of 100 to 200 mg of prednisolone will often alleviate the symptoms. In this case, administration may also be repeated at 48 and 96 hours.

DOGS: Intra-articular administration of 10 to 20 mg prednisolone should be injected, repeating injections if necessary, at 48-hours intervals. Systemic treatment, when preferred, may be administered intramuscularly at a dosage of 10 to 30 mg.

CAUTIONS: Prednisolone is an extremely potent drug with profound physiological effects. Animals receiving the drug should be under close observation. Prednisolone in large repeated dose may produce adrenal atrophy.
