There are a number of possible causes of your foot pain. Among the most common causes of pain with swelling or redness in the ball of the foot or one toe are gout, stress fracture, Morton's neuroma (a noncancerous tumor made of nerve tissue) or another type of arthritis. Even without fever or other associated symptoms, infection is still a possibility, especially if you have diabetes or poor circulation. Contact your doctor if symptoms persist.
