Introduction

Aromatic ammonia spirit is used as a mild stimulant to treat or prevent fainting.

Ammonia Spirit, Aromatic Dosage and Administration

The vapor of aromatic ammonia spirit may be inhaled. The drug may also be administered orally in doses of 2–4 mL, diluted with at least 30 mL of water.

Pharmacology

Aromatic ammonia spirit is a reflex respiratory stimulant by virtue of peripheral irritation of the sensory receptors in the nasal mucous membranes, esophageal mucosa, and fundus of the stomach. The drug acts also as an antacid and carminative.

Chemistry

Aromatic ammonia spirit is an aromatic, hydroalcoholic solution of ammonia. Each 100 mL of the spirit contains approximately 1.9 g of total ammonia, and ammonium carbonate corresponding to approximately 4 g. The spirit also contains lemon oil, lavender oil, nutmeg oil, and 65% alcohol. Aromatic ammonia spirit is a practically colorless liquid when recently prepared but gradually acquires a yellow color on standing. The spirit has the taste of ammonia and an aromatic and pungent odor.

Stability

Aromatic ammonia spirit is affected by light and should be protected from light and stored at a temperature not exceeding 30°C.
