In December 2017 Luxturna (voretigene neparvovec-rzyl), a form of gene therapy, was FDA-approved to treat a rare group of inherited vision disorders known as biallelic RPE65-mediated inherited retinal disease (IRD).

Luxturna is an adeno-associated viral (AAV) vector gene therapy tested in studies and given by subretinal injection to directly deliver a normal copy of the RPE65 gene directly into the eye.
