Chemical Name

Fine-grained, hydrous, phyllosilicate (or layer silicate) with a 2:1 arrangement of tetrahedral and octahedral sheet silicates. The latter further classified according to the structure of the octahedral sheet (dioctahedral or trioctahedral smectite).The basic units being composed of silicon-oxygen (tetrahedral sheet), the octahedral one is composed of aluminium or magnesium with oxygen from the tetrahedral sheet and with hydroxyl.
