Moderate

azithromycin nelfinavir

Applies to: Azithromycin Dose Pack (azithromycin), nelfinavir

MONITOR: The concomitant administration of nelfinavir may significantly increase plasma concentrations of azithromycin. The mechanism is unknown. When single doses of azithromycin 1200 mg were given after nelfinavir 750 mg 3 times daily for 11 days, azithromycin area under the plasma concentration-time curve (AUC) and peak plasma concentrations (Cmax) increased by more than 2-fold. Nelfinavir AUC and Cmax decreased slightly.

MANAGEMENT: Close monitoring for azithromycin side effects such as hearing disturbances and liver enzyme elevations is recommended during concomitant administration.
