bempedoic acid vamorolone

Applies to: Nexlizet (bempedoic acid/ezetimibe) and vamorolone

Bempedoic acid can cause tendinitis and tendon rupture, and the risk may be increased when combined with other drugs such as vamorolone. Older adults over 60 years of age, patients with kidney failure, and those with a previous tendon disorder may be particularly susceptible. Tendon rupture can occur within weeks to months of starting treatment with bempedoic acid. Talk to your doctor if you have any questions or concerns. Your doctor may be able to prescribe alternatives that do not interact, or you may need a dose adjustment or more frequent monitoring to safely use both medications. Stop taking bempedoic acid and call your doctor immediately if you experience pain, swelling, or inflammation of a tendon area such as the back of the ankle, shoulder, or biceps. You should also avoid exercise or use of the affected area until further instruction from your doctor. It is important to tell your doctor about all other medications you use, including vitamins and herbs. Do not stop using any medications without first talking to your doctor.

Grapefruit juice may increase the blood levels and effects of vamorolone. This may increase the risk and/or severity of side effects such as swelling, weight gain, electrolyte abnormalities, high blood pressure, high blood glucose, muscle weakness, depression, mood swings, acne, thinning skin, stretch marks, easy bruising, cataracts, glaucoma, excessive growth of facial or body hair, and abnormal distribution of body fat, especially in the face, neck, back, and waist. Other side effects that may occur include decreased ability to fight infections, increased risk of developing infections, and inadequate response to stress such as infection, surgery, trauma, or a severe asthma attack. Talk to your doctor if you have any questions or concerns. It is important to tell your doctor about all other medications you use, including vitamins and herbs. Do not stop using any medications without first talking to your doctor.
