Interactions between your drugs

Moderate

lomefloxacin ethinyl estradiol

Applies to: lomefloxacin and Min-Ovral 28 (ethinyl estradiol / levonorgestrel)

Antibiotics such as lomefloxacin may reduce the effects of ethinyl estradiol in some women. If you are using ethinyl estradiol for birth control, you may be at increased risk for pregnancy or breakthrough bleeding. Talk to your healthcare provider to determine if you should use an alternative or additional form of birth control during treatment with lomefloxacin. In addition, some birth control preparations may include "placebo" non-hormonal pills that contain iron. If you are taking these iron pills during treatment with lomefloxacin, you should separate the dosing times by several hours so that the iron does not interfere with absorption of the antibiotic. Ask your doctor or pharmacist for information on when best to take these medications. It is important to tell your doctor about all other medications you use, including vitamins and herbs. Do not stop using any medications without first talking to your doctor.

Drug and food interactions

Moderate

levonorgestrel food

Applies to: Min-Ovral 28 (ethinyl estradiol / levonorgestrel)

Grapefruit juice may increase the blood levels of certain medications such as levonorgestrel. You may want to limit your consumption of grapefruit and grapefruit juice during treatment with levonorgestrel. However, if you have been regularly consuming grapefruit or grapefruit juice with the medication, then it is advisable for you to talk with your doctor before changing the amounts of these products in your diet, as this may alter the effects of your medication. Contact your doctor if your condition changes or you experience increased side effects. Orange juice is not expected to interact.

Moderate

lomefloxacin food

Applies to: lomefloxacin

Lomefloxacin and multivitamin with minerals should not be taken orally at the same time. Products that contain magnesium, aluminum, calcium, iron, and/or other minerals may interfere with the absorption of lomefloxacin into the bloodstream and reduce its effectiveness. If possible, it may be best to avoid taking multivitamin with minerals while you are being treated with lomefloxacin. Otherwise, lomefloxacin should be taken 2 to 4 hours before or 4 to 6 hours after a multivitamin with minerals dose, lomefloxacin should be taken at least 2 hours before and not less than 6 hours after Suprep Bowel Prep (magnesium/potassium/sodium sulfates), or lomefloxacin and multivitamin with minerals should be taken as directed by your healthcare provider. Talk to your healthcare provider if you are unsure whether your medications contain something that could potentially interact or if you have questions on how to take this or other medications you are prescribed. It is important to tell your doctor about all other medications you use, including vitamins and herbs. Do not stop using any medications without first talking to your doctor.
