Drug interactions

Moderate drug interactions

Moderate:

promethazine house dust mite allergen extract

Applies to: Phenergan Fortis (promethazine) and house dust mite allergen extract

Using house dust mite allergen extract together with promethazine may not be advisable. Immunotherapy with house dust mite allergen extract can sometimes cause severe, even potentially life-threatening allergic reactions that require emergency treatment with epinephrine, and medications like promethazine can potentiate the body's response to epinephrine and significantly increase its effects on blood pressure and heart rate as well as serious and potentially fatal irregular heart rhythms. Talk to your doctor if you have any questions or concerns. It is important to tell your doctor about all other medications you use, including vitamins and herbs. Do not stop using any medications without first talking to your doctor.

Food/lifestyle interactions

Moderate food/lifestyle interactions

Moderate:

house dust mite allergen extract Food/Lifestyle

Applies to: house dust mite allergen extract

Consuming food or beverage during or immediately after using house dust mite allergen extract may reduce the amount of allergen extract available for absorption from tissues under the tongue into the blood stream. Food or beverage should not be taken with, or for at least 5 minutes after, using house dust mite allergen extract. Use of alcohol with house dust mite allergen extract may increase the risk and severity of allergic reactions that can sometimes occur during treatment with house dust mite allergen extract. Potentially life-threatening or fatal reactions may occur. Talk to your doctor if you have any questions or concerns. Stop using house dust mite allergen extract, administer epinephrine, and seek immediate medical attention if signs and symptoms of an allergic reaction develop such as trouble breathing, swallowing, or speaking; throat tightness or swelling; dizziness, lightheadedness, or fainting; rapid or weak heartbeat; severe stomach cramps or pain; vomiting or diarrhea; and/or severe flushing or itching. It is important to tell your doctor about all other medications you use, including vitamins and herbs. Do not stop using any medications without first talking to your doctor.

Moderate:

promethazine Alcohol (Ethanol)

Applies to: Phenergan Fortis (promethazine)

Ask your doctor before using promethazine together with ethanol (alcohol). This can cause uncontrollable movements, agitation, seizures, severe dizziness or fainting, coma, very deep sleep, irregular heartbeats, and high or low body temperature. Use caution when driving, operating machinery, or performing other hazardous activities, these medicaions may cause dizziness or drowsiness. If you experience dizziness or drowsiness, avoid these activities. It is important to tell your doctor about all other medications you use, including vitamins and herbs. Do not stop using any medications without first talking to your doctor.

Gastrointestinal Obstruction

Moderate:

Phenergan Fortis

The promethazine in Phenergan Fortis has a moderate potential interaction with Gastrointestinal Obstruction.

Antihistamines often have anticholinergic activity, to which elderly patients are particularly sensitive. Therapy with antihistamines should be administered cautiously, if at all, in patients with preexisting conditions that are likely to be exacerbated by anticholinergic activity, such as urinary retention or obstruction; angle-closure glaucoma, untreated intraocular hypertension, or uncontrolled primary open-angle glaucoma; and gastrointestinal obstructive disorders. Conventional, first-generation antihistamines such as the ethanolamines (bromodiphenhydramine, carbinoxamine, clemastine, dimenhydrinate, diphenhydramine, doxylamine, phenyltoloxamine) tend to exhibit substantial anticholinergic effects. In contrast, the newer, relatively nonsedating antihistamines (e.g., cetirizine, fexofenadine, loratadine) reportedly have low to minimal anticholinergic activity at normally recommended dosages and may be appropriate alternatives.
