Can you take Ethanol with Fish Oil?
No drug interactions found, but 4 warnings to review for the following 2 drugs:
- ethanol
- Fish Oil (omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids)
Drug interactions
There were no interactions found between ethanol and Fish Oil. However, this does not necessarily mean no interactions exist. Always consult your healthcare provider.
Food/lifestyle interactions
No alcohol/food interactions were found. However, this does not necessarily mean no interactions exist. Always consult your healthcare provider.
Disease interactions
4 potential interactions Applies to: 3 conditions, including Arrhythmia, Liver Disease, and Long QT Syndrome.
Arrhythmia
Moderate:
Fish Oil
The omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids in Fish Oil has a moderate potential interaction with Arrhythmia.
Cases of recurrent atrial fibrillation (AF) or flutter have been reported with the use of omega-3 fatty acids in patients with a symptomatic paroxysmal AF or persistent AF. This condition is more apparent within the first 2 to 3 months after the initiation of therapy. Therapy with these agents should be administered cautiously in patients with cardiac conduction disorders.
Liver Disease
Moderate:
ethanol
Ethanol has a moderate potential interaction with Liver Disease.
For IV ethanol, the initial infusion rate for continuous infusion in adults with liver disease is specified irrespective of chronic drinking status. The hepatic-disease regimen should be followed, and ethanol concentrations should be monitored to guide adjustment of the maintenance infusion rate and maintain the target concentration range.
Moderate:
Fish Oil
The omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids in Fish Oil has a moderate potential interaction with Liver Disease.
Increases in alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and/or aspartate aminotransferase (AST) levels have been observed in patients receiving omega-3 fatty acids. Therapy with omega-3 fatty acid preparations should be administered cautiously in patients with hepatic impairment. Serum liver enzyme levels should be monitored periodically.
Long QT Syndrome
Moderate:
ethanol
Ethanol has a moderate potential interaction with Long QT Syndrome.
IV ethanol may prolong the QT interval; this occurred in some subjects at target plasma or serum ethanol concentrations. ECGs should be monitored during treatment and alternative treatments should be considered if QT prolongation is present or arrhythmias develop.

Drug Interaction Classification
| Highly clinically significant. Avoid combinations; the risk of the interaction outweighs the benefit. | |
| Moderately clinically significant. Usually avoid combinations; use it only under special circumstances. | |
| Minimally clinically significant. Minimize risk; assess risk and consider an alternative drug, take steps to circumvent the interaction risk and/or institute a monitoring plan. | |
| No interaction information available. |
