This report displays the potential drug interactions for the following 2 drugs:
- cobicistat/elvitegravir/emtricitabine/tenofovir alafenamide
- Exforge HCT (amlodipine/hydrochlorothiazide/valsartan)
Interactions between your drugs
amLODIPine cobicistat
Applies to: Exforge HCT (amlodipine / hydrochlorothiazide / valsartan) and cobicistat / elvitegravir / emtricitabine / tenofovir alafenamide
Cobicistat may increase the blood levels of amLODIPine. You may be more likely to experience serious side effects such as irregular heart rhythm, fluid retention, swelling, heart failure, and excessively low blood pressure. You may need a dose adjustment or more frequent monitoring by your doctor to safely use both medications. You should seek medical attention if you develop dizziness or fainting; sudden, unexplained weight gain; swelling of the hands, ankles, or feet; chest pain; or difficulty breathing during treatment with these medications. Avoid driving or operating hazardous machinery until you know how the medications affect you, and use caution when getting up from a sitting or lying position. It is important to tell your doctor about all other medications you use, including vitamins and herbs. Do not stop using any medications without first talking to your doctor.
tenofovir cobicistat
Applies to: cobicistat / elvitegravir / emtricitabine / tenofovir alafenamide and cobicistat / elvitegravir / emtricitabine / tenofovir alafenamide
Using cobicistat together with tenofovir can increase the effects of tenofovir, which can cause new or worse kidney problems. You may need a dose adjustment or more frequent monitoring by your doctor to safely use both medications. Contact your doctor if your condition changes or you experience increased side effects. It is important to tell your doctor about all other medications you use, including vitamins and herbs. Do not stop using any medications without first talking to your doctor.
emtricitabine cobicistat
Applies to: cobicistat / elvitegravir / emtricitabine / tenofovir alafenamide and cobicistat / elvitegravir / emtricitabine / tenofovir alafenamide
Cobicistat is a medication used to boost the effects of some medications that treat HIV infection. However, using cobicistat together with other HIV medications, such as emtricitabine, may alter the blood levels and effects of both medications. Using emtricitabine with cobicistat may reduce or increase blood levels of cobicistat. Reduced blood levels of cobicistat may make cobicistat less effective and may cause overall HIV treatment to be less effective. Cobicistat may increase blood levels of emtricitabine which may increase the risk of side effects. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions on how to use these medications properly. Your doctor may be able to prescribe alternatives that do not interact, or you may need a dose adjustment or more frequent monitoring to safely use both medications. Contact your doctor if your condition changes or you experience increased side effects. It is important to tell your doctor about all other medications you use, including vitamins and herbs. Do not stop using any medications without first talking to your doctor.
hydroCHLOROthiazide amLODIPine
Applies to: Exforge HCT (amlodipine / hydrochlorothiazide / valsartan) and Exforge HCT (amlodipine / hydrochlorothiazide / valsartan)
Information for this minor interaction is available on the professional version.
Drug and food interactions
valsartan food
Applies to: Exforge HCT (amlodipine / hydrochlorothiazide / valsartan)
If you are taking valsartan you should avoid potassium-containing salt substitutes or over-the-counter potassium supplements without first talking to your doctor. This can cause high levels of potassium in your blood. High levels of potassium can cause weakness, irregular heartbeat, confusion, tingling of the extremities, or feelings of heaviness in the legs. Call your doctor at once if you have any of these symptoms.
elvitegravir food
Applies to: cobicistat / elvitegravir / emtricitabine / tenofovir alafenamide
Food significantly increases the absorption of elvitegravir. You should take each dose of elvitegravir with a meal. Taking it on an empty stomach may lead to inadequate blood levels and reduced effectiveness of the medication in treating HIV infection.
hydroCHLOROthiazide food
Applies to: Exforge HCT (amlodipine / hydrochlorothiazide / valsartan)
HydroCHLOROthiazide and ethanol may have additive effects in lowering your blood pressure. You may experience headache, dizziness, lightheadedness, fainting, and/or changes in pulse or heart rate. These side effects are most likely to be seen at the beginning of treatment, following a dose increase, or when treatment is restarted after an interruption. Let your doctor know if you develop these symptoms and they do not go away after a few days or they become troublesome. Avoid driving or operating hazardous machinery until you know how the medications affect you, and use caution when getting up from a sitting or lying position. It is important to tell your doctor about all other medications you use, including vitamins and herbs. Do not stop using any medications without first talking to your doctor.
