Drug interactions
Moderate drug interactions
Moderate:
bleomycin DAUNOrubicin
Applies to: Bleo 15k (bleomycin) and daunorubicin
Using bleomycin together with DAUNOrubicin or other chemotherapy drugs may increase the risk of side effects, especially those that affect the bone marrow or gastrointestinal tract. You may experience a greater number or more severe side effects such as nausea; vomiting; diarrhea; loss of appetite; mouth sores; abdominal pain; delayed wound healing; and impaired bone marrow function resulting in low numbers of different types of blood cells. You may also be more likely to develop anemia, bleeding problems, or infections due to low blood cell counts. You should seek medical attention if you develop paleness, fatigue, dizziness, fainting, unusual bruising or bleeding, fever, chills, diarrhea, sore throat, muscle aches, shortness of breath, blood in phlegm, weight loss, red or inflamed skin, body sores, and pain or burning during urination. You may need a dose adjustment or more frequent monitoring by your doctor to safely use these medications. It is important to tell your doctor about all other medications you use, including vitamins and herbs. Do not stop using any medications without first talking to your doctor.
Therapeutic duplication warnings
Therapeutic duplication is the use of more than one medicine from the same drug category or therapeutic class to treat the same condition.
It can be intentional, when combining drugs with similar actions adds demonstrated therapeutic benefit — or unintentional, such as when a patient sees multiple prescribers or fills prescriptions at more than one pharmacy, which can lead to adverse effects.
Duplication:
Antineoplastic antibiotics
The recommended maximum number of medicines in the 'antineoplastic antibiotics' category to be taken concurrently is usually one. Your list includes two medicines belonging to the 'antineoplastic antibiotics' category:
- Bleo 15k (bleomycin)
- daunorubicin
Note: In certain circumstances, the benefits of taking this combination of drugs may outweigh any risks. Always consult your healthcare provider before making changes to your medications or dosage.
Food/lifestyle interactions
No alcohol/food interactions were found. However, this does not necessarily mean no interactions exist. Always consult your healthcare provider.
Disease interactions
10 potential interactions Applies to: 8 conditions, including Heart Failure, Fever, Liver Disease, Infection, and Bleeding Disorder.
Bleeding Disorder
Major:
daunorubicin
DAUNOrubicin has a major potential interaction with Bleeding Disorder.
Daunorubicin hydrochloride is a potent bone marrow suppressant. Suppression will occur in all patients given a therapeutic dose of the drug. Therapy with daunorubicin hydrochloride should not be started in patients with preexisting drug-induced bone marrow suppression unless the benefit from such treatment warrants the risk. Persistent, severe myelosuppression may result in superinfection or hemorrhage. Patients should be instructed to immediately report any signs or symptoms suggesting bone marrow suppression such as fever, sore throat, local infection, or bleeding. Close clinical monitory of hematopoietic function is recommended.
Bone Marrow Depression/Low Blood Counts
Major:
daunorubicin
DAUNOrubicin has a major potential interaction with Bone Marrow Depression/Low Blood Counts.
Fever
Major:
daunorubicin
DAUNOrubicin has a major potential interaction with Fever.
Heart Failure
Major:
daunorubicin
DAUNOrubicin has a major potential interaction with Heart Failure.
Daunorubicin can cause myocardial toxicity leading to congestive heart failure. Patients with preexisting heart disease or prior anthracycline therapy are at increased risk of congestive heart failure. The benefit-to-risk ratio of daunorubicin therapy in such patients should be weighed before starting treatment. The incidence of drug-induced congestive heart failure in adults is increased when the total cumulative dose of daunorubicin exceeds 550/mg/m2. An electrocardiogram and/or determination of systolic ejection fraction prior to each course of therapy is recommended.
Infection
Major:
daunorubicin
DAUNOrubicin has a major potential interaction with Infection.
Daunorubicin can induce severe myelosuppression at therapeutic doses. The use of daunorubicin may be contraindicated in patients with known infectious diseases. All patients should be instructed to immediately report any signs or symptoms suggesting infection such as fever, sore throat, or local infection during therapy with daunorubicin. Close clinical monitoring of hematopoietic function is recommended.
Liver Disease
Moderate:
Bleo 15k
The bleomycin in Bleo 15k has a moderate potential interaction with Liver Disease.
The effect of hepatic insufficiency on the pharmacokinetics of bleomycin has not been evaluated. However, hepatic toxicity, beginning as a deterioration in liver function tests, has been reported. These toxicities may occur at any time after initiation of therapy. Caution and monitoring is advised if bleomycin is used in patients with liver impairment.
Moderate:
daunorubicin
DAUNOrubicin has a moderate potential interaction with Liver Disease.
Daunorubicin is extensively metabolized to a biologically active form within normal erythrocytes and leukocytes. Further metabolism via reduction and conjugation has been demonstrated. Approximately 40% of daunorubicin is eliminated in an active form by biliary excretion. Patients with hepatic impairment may be at increased risk for toxicity. Therapy with daunorubicin should be administered cautiously and the dosage reduced in patients with compromised hepatic function. Clinical evaluation of liver function prior to each course of treatment with daunorubicin is recommended.
Pulmonary Impairment
Major:
Bleo 15k
The bleomycin in Bleo 15k has a major potential interaction with Pulmonary Impairment.
Pulmonary pneumonitis occurs in 10% of patients during bleomycin therapy and 1% progress to pulmonary fibrosis and death. Although pulmonary toxicity is age and dose related, occurring primarily in patients over 70 years of age and in those receiving a total dose > 400 units, it has occurred in younger patients at a lower dose. Extreme caution should be exercised when administering bleomycin in patients with compromised pulmonary function. Patients should be instructed to immediately report symptoms of dyspnea, cough, or congestion. Close clinical monitoring of pulmonary function is recommended.
Renal Dysfunction
Major:
Bleo 15k
The bleomycin in Bleo 15k has a major potential interaction with Renal Dysfunction.
Bleomycin is primarily eliminated by the kidney. Approximately 60% to 70% of bleomycin is excreted in the urine as active drug. Moderate renal failure reduces elimination to < 20% of the drug. Extreme caution should be exercised when administering bleomycin in patients with existing or predisposition to significantly compromised renal function. Close clinical monitoring of renal function is recommended.
Moderate:
daunorubicin
DAUNOrubicin has a moderate potential interaction with Renal Dysfunction.
Approximately 25% of daunorubicin is eliminated in an active form in the urine. Patient with renal impairment are at risk of greater toxicity noted at the recommended dose of daunorubicin. Therapy with daunorubicin should be administered cautiously and at a reduced dosage in patients with significantly compromised renal function. Clinical evaluation of renal function prior to each course of treatment is recommended.
