Drug Interactions between bismuth subnitrate / calcium hydroxide and hydromorphone / ropivacaine
This report displays the potential drug interactions for the following 2 drugs:
- bismuth subnitrate/calcium hydroxide
- hydromorphone/ropivacaine
Interactions between your drugs
HYDROmorphone bismuth subnitrate
Applies to: hydromorphone / ropivacaine and bismuth subnitrate / calcium hydroxide
Using bismuth subnitrate together with HYDROmorphone can increase the blood levels or add to the side effects of either medication. Talk with your doctor before using these medications together. Call the doctor if you have side effects such as extreme drowsiness, dizziness, weak pulse, slow heart rate, sweating, urinating less than usual, severe stomach cramps or bloating, and vomiting. You should avoid activities requiring mental alertness until you know how these medications affect you. It is important to tell your doctor about all other medications you use, including vitamins and herbs. Do not stop using any medications without first talking to your doctor.
bismuth subnitrate ROPivacaine
Applies to: bismuth subnitrate / calcium hydroxide and hydromorphone / ropivacaine
Using bismuth subnitrate together with ROPivacaine may cause methemoglobinemia, a rare condition that can lead to oxygen deprivation in tissues and vital organs due to reduced oxygen-carrying capacity of the blood. Individuals may be more susceptible to developing methemoglobinemia during treatment with these medications if they are very young (especially neonates and infants) or have diseases of the heart or lungs, certain genetic predispositions, or glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency. Medical supervision may be necessary when medications that can cause methemoglobinemia are used together. Signs and symptoms of methemoglobinemia may occur immediately or hours after treatment. Patients or their caregivers should seek immediate medical attention if they develop gray discoloration of the skin, abnormal blood coloration, nausea, headache, dizziness, lightheadedness, fatigue, shortness of breath, rapid or shallow breathing, a rapid heartbeat, palpitation, anxiety, or confusion. It is important to tell your doctor about all other medications you use, including vitamins and herbs. Do not stop using any medications without first talking to your doctor.
Drug and food interactions
HYDROmorphone food
Applies to: hydromorphone / ropivacaine
Do not use alcohol or medications that contain alcohol while you are receiving treatment with HYDROmorphone. This may increase nervous system side effects such as drowsiness, dizziness, lightheadedness, difficulty concentrating, and impairment in thinking and judgment. In severe cases, low blood pressure, respiratory distress, fainting, coma, or even death may occur. If you are taking certain long-acting formulations of hydromorphone, consumption of alcohol may also cause rapid release of the drug, resulting in high blood levels that may be potentially lethal. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist if you have questions on how to take this or other medications you are prescribed. Do not use more than the recommended dose of HYDROmorphone, and avoid activities requiring mental alertness such as driving or operating hazardous machinery until you know how the medication affects you. It is important to tell your doctor about all other medications you use, including vitamins and herbs. Do not stop using any medication without first talking to your doctor.
