Drug Interactions between atazanavir and ethinyl estradiol
This report displays the potential drug interactions for the following 2 drugs:
- atazanavir
- ethinyl estradiol
Interactions between your drugs
ethinyl estradiol atazanavir
Applies to: ethinyl estradiol and atazanavir
Ask your doctor before using ethinyl estradiol together with atazanavir. Atazanavir may affect the safety and decrease the birth control effectiveness of ethinyl estradiol. Women who use birth control pills or birth control patches should choose a different kind of contraception during atazanavir therapy. Using ethinyl estradiol together with atazanavir can also increase the blood levels or add to the side effects of ethinyl estradiol. This can cause sudden headache, confusion, pain behind the eyes, problems with vision, speech, or balance, nausea, and stomach pain. It is important to tell your doctor about all other medications you use, including vitamins and herbs. Do not stop using any medications without first talking to your doctor.
Drug and food interactions
atazanavir food
Applies to: atazanavir
Food can enhance the levels of atazanavir in your body. To ensure maximal oral absorption, atazanavir should be administered with or immediately after a meal. This will make it easier for your body to absorb the medication.
ethinyl estradiol food
Applies to: ethinyl estradiol
Consumer information for this interaction is not currently available.
MONITOR: Coadministration of ethinyl estradiol may increase the plasma concentrations of drugs that are primarily metabolized by CYP450 1A2. In a study of 30 healthy volunteers administered the CYP450 1A2 substrate tizanidine, the systemic exposure (AUC) of tizanidine was 3.9 times greater in women using an oral contraceptive containing ethinyl estradiol.
MANAGEMENT: Patients should be monitored for increased adverse effects of the CYP450 1A2 substrate during concomitant use with ethinyl estradiol. Product labeling for the specific CYP450 1A2 substrate should be consulted for additional recommendations.
