Interactions between your drugs

Moderate

aspirin budesonide

Applies to: Alka-Seltzer Plus Cold Formula Orange Zest Effervescent Tablets (aspirin / chlorpheniramine / phenylephrine) and Breztri Aerosphere (budesonide / formoterol / glycopyrrolate)

Using aspirin together with budesonide may increase the risk of side effects in the gastrointestinal tract such as inflammation, bleeding, ulceration, and rarely, perforation. Gastrointestinal perforation is a potentially fatal condition and medical emergency where a hole forms all the way through the stomach or intestine. You should take these medications with food to lessen the risk. In addition, steroid medications like budesonide have been reported to decrease the blood levels of aspirin and similar drugs in some cases, which may make them less effective in treating your condition. On the other hand, if you have been receiving both medications and budesonide is stopped, blood levels of aspirin may subsequently increase and a dosage reduction may be required to avoid toxicity. Talk to your doctor if you have any questions or concerns. You may need a dose adjustment or more frequent monitoring by your doctor to safely use both medications. Your doctor may also be able to recommend medications to help protect the stomach and intestine if you are at high risk for developing serious gastrointestinal complications. You should seek immediate medical attention if you experience any unusual bleeding or bruising, or have other signs and symptoms of bleeding such as dizziness; lightheadedness; red or black, tarry stools; coughing up or vomiting fresh or dried blood that looks like coffee grounds; severe headache; and weakness. It is important to tell your doctor about all other medications you use, including vitamins and herbs. Do not stop using any medications without first talking to your doctor.

Moderate

chlorpheniramine glycopyrrolate

Applies to: Alka-Seltzer Plus Cold Formula Orange Zest Effervescent Tablets (aspirin / chlorpheniramine / phenylephrine) and Breztri Aerosphere (budesonide / formoterol / glycopyrrolate)

Using chlorpheniramine together with glycopyrrolate may increase side effects such as drowsiness, blurred vision, dry mouth, heat intolerance, flushing, decreased sweating, difficulty urinating, abdominal cramping, constipation, irregular heartbeat, confusion, and memory problems. Side effects may be more likely to occur in the elderly or those with a debilitating condition. You should avoid or limit the use of alcohol while being treated with these medications. Also avoid activities requiring mental alertness such as driving or operating hazardous machinery until you know how the medications affect you. Talk to your doctor if you have any questions or concerns. It is important to tell your doctor about all other medications you use, including vitamins and herbs. Do not stop using any medications without first talking to your doctor.

Moderate

phenylephrine glycopyrrolate

Applies to: Alka-Seltzer Plus Cold Formula Orange Zest Effervescent Tablets (aspirin / chlorpheniramine / phenylephrine) and Breztri Aerosphere (budesonide / formoterol / glycopyrrolate)

Glycopyrrolate may increase the effects of phenylephrine on your blood pressure and heart rate. Before receiving these medications, you should let your doctor know if you have high blood pressure or heart disease. You may not be able to use one or both of these medications, or you may need closer monitoring by your doctor in order to use these medications. It is important to tell your doctor about all other medications you use, including vitamins and herbs. Do not stop using any medications without first talking to your doctor.

Moderate

phenylephrine formoterol

Applies to: Alka-Seltzer Plus Cold Formula Orange Zest Effervescent Tablets (aspirin / chlorpheniramine / phenylephrine) and Breztri Aerosphere (budesonide / formoterol / glycopyrrolate)

Using phenylephrine together with formoterol may increase cardiovascular side effects such as elevations in heart rate and blood pressure or irregular heart rhythm. Talk to your doctor if you have any questions or concerns, particularly if you have a history of high blood pressure, arrhythmia, or heart disease. Your doctor may be able to prescribe alternatives that do not interact, or you may need a dose adjustment or more frequent monitoring to safely use both medications. It is important to tell your doctor about all other medications you use, including vitamins and herbs. Do not stop using any medications without first talking to your doctor.

Drug and food/lifestyle interactions

Moderate

chlorpheniramine food/lifestyle

Applies to: Alka-Seltzer Plus Cold Formula Orange Zest Effervescent Tablets (aspirin / chlorpheniramine / phenylephrine)

Alcohol can increase the nervous system side effects of chlorpheniramine such as dizziness, drowsiness, and difficulty concentrating. Some people may also experience impairment in thinking and judgment. You should avoid or limit the use of alcohol while being treated with chlorpheniramine. Do not use more than the recommended dose of chlorpheniramine, and avoid activities requiring mental alertness such as driving or operating hazardous machinery until you know how the medication affects you. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions or concerns.

Moderate

budesonide food/lifestyle

Applies to: Breztri Aerosphere (budesonide / formoterol / glycopyrrolate)

You should avoid the regular consumption of large amounts of grapefruits and grapefruit juice while taking budesonide. Grapefruit can raise the levels of budesonide in your body and lead to increased side effects. Do not increase or decrease the amount of grapefruit products in your diet without first talking to your doctor.

Moderate

aspirin food/lifestyle

Applies to: Alka-Seltzer Plus Cold Formula Orange Zest Effervescent Tablets (aspirin / chlorpheniramine / phenylephrine)

Ask your doctor before using aspirin together with ethanol (alcohol). Do not drink alcohol while taking aspirin. Alcohol can increase your risk of stomach bleeding caused by aspirin. Call your doctor at once if you have symptoms of bleeding in your stomach or intestines. This includes black, bloody, or tarry stools, or coughing up blood or vomit that looks like coffee grounds. It is important to tell your doctor about all other medications you use, including vitamins and herbs. Do not stop using any medications without first talking to your doctor.

Moderate

glycopyrrolate food/lifestyle

Applies to: Breztri Aerosphere (budesonide / formoterol / glycopyrrolate)

Ask your doctor before using glycopyrrolate together with ethanol (alcohol). Use alcohol cautiously. Alcohol may increase drowsiness and dizziness while you are taking glycopyrrolate. You should be warned not to exceed recommended dosages and to avoid activities requiring mental alertness. If your doctor prescribes these medications together, you may need a dose adjustment to safely take this combination. It is important to tell your doctor about all other medications you use, including vitamins and herbs. Do not stop using any medications without first talking to your doctor.

Moderate

phenylephrine food/lifestyle

Applies to: Alka-Seltzer Plus Cold Formula Orange Zest Effervescent Tablets (aspirin / chlorpheniramine / phenylephrine)

Both phenylephrine and caffeine can increase blood pressure and heart rate, and combining them may enhance these effects. Talk to your doctor before using these medications, especially if you have a history of high blood pressure or heart disease. You may need a dose adjustment or more frequent monitoring by your doctor to safely use both medications. Contact your doctor if your condition changes or you experience increased side effects. It is important to tell your doctor about all other medications you use, including vitamins and herbs. Do not stop using any medications without first talking to your doctor.
