Drug Interactions between alfentanil and olanzapine / samidorphan
This report displays the potential drug interactions for the following 2 drugs:
- alfentanil
- olanzapine/samidorphan
Interactions between your drugs
ALfentanil OLANZapine
Applies to: alfentanil and olanzapine / samidorphan
Using narcotic pain or cough medications together with other medications that also cause central nervous system depression such as OLANZapine can lead to serious side effects including respiratory distress, coma, and even death. Talk to your doctor if you have any questions or concerns. Your doctor may be able to prescribe alternatives that do not interact, or you may need a dose adjustment or more frequent monitoring to safely use both medications. Do not drink alcohol or self-medicate with these medications without your doctor's approval, and do not exceed the doses or frequency and duration of use prescribed by your doctor. Also, because these medications may cause dizziness, drowsiness, difficulty concentrating, and impairment in judgment, reaction speed and motor coordination, you should avoid driving or operating hazardous machinery until you know how they affect you.
Using narcotic pain or cough medications together with OLANZapine may also increase the risk of constipation. Severe complications may include intestinal obstruction, fecal impaction, or other serious and even life-threatening injuries to the bowel that may require hospitalization or surgery. You should maintain adequate hydration, physical activity, and fiber intake during treatment with these medications to help prevent constipation. Talk to your healthcare provider to see if taking a laxative prophylactically may be appropriate for you. Seek immediate medical attention if you experience signs and symptoms of constipation such as difficulty passing stool, incomplete passage of stool, hard or dry stool, and decreased bowel movement frequency (especially if less than three times a week), or if you have symptoms that could indicate more serious gastrointestinal problems such as nausea, vomiting, bloating, and abdominal pain or swelling. Prompt treatment with appropriate laxatives and other measures are essential to minimize the risk of complications. It is important to tell your doctor about all other medications you use, including vitamins and herbs. Do not stop using any medications without first talking to your doctor.
ALfentanil samidorphan
Applies to: alfentanil and olanzapine / samidorphan
Using samidorphan together with ALfentanil is not recommended. Samidorphan can block the effects of opioids like ALfentanil and make the medication less effective or ineffective in treating your condition. If you have been receiving opioid-containing medications for a while (for example, a week or longer), initiating samidorphan can also precipitate withdrawal symptoms that sometimes are severe enough to warrant hospitalization. Talk to your doctor if you have any questions or concerns. Your doctor may be able to prescribe alternatives that do not interact, or direct you to stop using ALfentanil for at least one to two weeks before you initiate treatment with samidorphan. Do not increase the dose or frequency of use of ALfentanil on your own in order to overcome the opioid-blocking effects of samidorphan, as this may increase the risk of opioid overdose and death, especially when samidorphan is interrupted or discontinued. Following treatment with samidorphan, it takes some time for the opioid-blocking effect to go away and you may be more more sensitive to the effects of opioids during this time. If you have used opioid street drugs or opioid-containing medications in the past, using them in the amounts that you used before treatment with samidorphan can also lead to overdose and death. Therefore, you should wait at least 5 days after you stop treatment with samidorphan before you start using opioids. However, it is best to consult a healthcare provider before using any opioids. It is important to tell your doctor about all other medications you use, including vitamins and herbs. Do not stop using any medications without first talking to your doctor.
Drug and food interactions
OLANZapine food
Applies to: olanzapine / samidorphan
Alcohol can increase the nervous system side effects of OLANZapine such as dizziness, drowsiness, and difficulty concentrating. Some people may also experience impairment in thinking and judgment. You should avoid or limit the use of alcohol while being treated with OLANZapine. Do not use more than the recommended dose of OLANZapine, and avoid activities requiring mental alertness such as driving or operating hazardous machinery until you know how the medication affects you. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions or concerns.
ALfentanil food
Applies to: alfentanil
Do not use alcohol or medications that contain alcohol while you are receiving treatment with ALfentanil. This may increase nervous system side effects such as drowsiness, dizziness, lightheadedness, difficulty concentrating, and impairment in thinking and judgment. In severe cases, low blood pressure, respiratory distress, fainting, coma, or even death may occur. With certain long-acting formulations of narcotic pain medication, consumption of alcohol may also cause rapid release of the drug, resulting in high blood levels that may be potentially lethal. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist if you have questions on how to take this or other medications you are prescribed. Do not use more than the recommended dose of ALfentanil, and avoid activities requiring mental alertness such as driving or operating hazardous machinery until you know how the medication affects you. It is important to tell your doctor about all other medications you use, including vitamins and herbs. Do not stop using any medication without first talking to your doctor.
