Edit list (add/remove drugs)

Interactions between your drugs

Major

melatonin sodium oxybate

Applies to: 5-hydroxytryptophan / melatonin / pyridoxine and sodium oxybate

Consumer information for this interaction is not currently available.

GENERALLY AVOID: The central nervous system and respiratory depressant effects of sodium oxybate, which is the sodium salt of gamma hydroxybutyrate (GHB), may be potentiated by concomitant use of other agents with CNS depressant effects. An increased risk of serious adverse reactions such as respiratory depression, hypotension, profound sedation, syncope, coma, and even death should be considered.

MANAGEMENT: Concomitant use of sodium oxybate with other CNS depressants should be avoided whenever possible. Otherwise, close monitoring and/or dosage reductions should be considered. If short-term use of a CNS depressant is required (e.g., post- or perioperative opioid), a temporary interruption of sodium oxybate therapy may be appropriate. All patients treated with sodium oxybate should be advised not to drive, operate machinery, or engage in hazardous activities requiring mental alertness and motor coordination for at least 6 hours after taking the second nightly dose of sodium oxybate and until they know how the medication affects them.

Drug and food interactions

Major

sodium oxybate food

Applies to: sodium oxybate

Food may interfere with the absorption of sodium oxybate. You should wait at least 2 hours after eating before you take the first dose. Avoid alcohol during treatment, as it may add to the central nervous system effects of sodium oxybate and increase the risk of serious side effects such as respiratory depression, low blood pressure, fainting, coma, and even death. Do not drive, operate machinery, or perform other hazardous activities for at least six hours after taking sodium oxybate and until you know how the medication affects you. It is important to tell your doctor about all other medications you use, including vitamins and herbs. Do not stop using any medications without first talking to your doctor.

Moderate

melatonin food

Applies to: 5-hydroxytryptophan / melatonin / pyridoxine

Both smoking and excessive caffeine consumption can alter the blood levels of melatonin, which may affect the dosing. Tobacco smoking reduces, while caffeine increases melatonin blood levels. If you start smoking or undergo smoking cessation, your doctor may need to adjust the dose of melatonin. In addition, alcohol may reduce the effect of melatonin on sleep. It is best to avoid alcohol consumption during melatonin therapy. Talk to a healthcare professional if you have any questions or concerns. It is important to tell your doctor about all other medications you use, including vitamins and herbs. Do not stop using any medications without first talking to your doctor.

Therapeutic duplication warnings

No warnings were found for your selected drugs.

Therapeutic duplication warnings are only returned when drugs within the same group exceed the recommended therapeutic duplication maximum.

Drug Interaction Classification

These classifications are only a guideline. The relevance of a particular drug interaction to a specific individual is difficult to determine. Always consult your healthcare provider before starting or stopping any medication.
Major Highly clinically significant. Avoid combinations; the risk of the interaction outweighs the benefit.
Moderate Moderately clinically significant. Usually avoid combinations; use it only under special circumstances.
Minor Minimally clinically significant. Minimize risk; assess risk and consider an alternative drug, take steps to circumvent the interaction risk and/or institute a monitoring plan.
Unknown No interaction information available.
