Drug Interactions between 5-hydroxytryptophan / melatonin / pyridoxine and flibanserin
This report displays the potential drug interactions for the following 2 drugs:
- 5-hydroxytryptophan/melatonin/pyridoxine
- flibanserin
Interactions between your drugs
melatonin flibanserin
Applies to: 5-hydroxytryptophan / melatonin / pyridoxine and flibanserin
Consumer information for this interaction is not currently available.
MONITOR: The central nervous system (CNS) effects of flibanserin such as somnolence and fatigue may be potentiated by concomitant use of other agents with CNS depressant effects. In five 24-week clinical trials, the incidence of somnolence, sedation, or fatigue was 21% and 8% in patients treated with flibanserin 100 mg once daily at bedtime and placebo, respectively. The risk of CNS depression is increased if flibanserin is taken during waking hours or with alcohol or other CNS depressants.
MANAGEMENT: Patients receiving flibanserin with other agents that can cause CNS depression should be apprised of the potential for increased adverse effects such as drowsiness, dizziness, lightheadedness, and fatigue. Patients should not drive, operate machinery, or engage in hazardous activities requiring mental alertness and motor coordination for at least 6 hours after taking flibanserin and until they know how the medication affects them.
Drug and food interactions
flibanserin food
Applies to: flibanserin
Do not use alcohol too close to the dosing time of flibanserin. Doing so can cause excessive drowsiness and decreases in blood pressure, which may lead to dizziness, lightheadedness, fainting, and accidental injury. Take flibanserin at bedtime to minimize the risk of these effects. It is recommended that you stop drinking alcohol at least two hours before taking flibanserin; otherwise, you should just skip the flibanserin dose that evening. Alcohol should not be consumed until at least the morning after taking flibanserin at bedtime. Because grapefruit juice can significantly increase the blood levels of flibanserin, you should also avoid the consumption of grapefruit and grapefruit juice during treatment. Talk to your healthcare provider if you have any questions or concerns. It is important to tell your doctor about all other medications you use, including vitamins and herbs. Do not stop using any medications without first talking to your doctor.
melatonin food
Applies to: 5-hydroxytryptophan / melatonin / pyridoxine
Both smoking and excessive caffeine consumption can alter the blood levels of melatonin, which may affect the dosing. Tobacco smoking reduces, while caffeine increases melatonin blood levels. If you start smoking or undergo smoking cessation, your doctor may need to adjust the dose of melatonin. In addition, alcohol may reduce the effect of melatonin on sleep. It is best to avoid alcohol consumption during melatonin therapy. Talk to a healthcare professional if you have any questions or concerns. It is important to tell your doctor about all other medications you use, including vitamins and herbs. Do not stop using any medications without first talking to your doctor.
