Antiadrenergic agents (peripheral) with thiazides

Alpha adrenoreceptor antagonists prevent the stimulation of alpha-adrenergic receptors at the nerve endings of the sympathetic nervous system. Alpha1-selective antagonists are used as cardiovascular agents as they block the alpha adrenoreceptors on the vascular smooth muscle and widen the arteries, causing vasodilatation and a reduction in blood pressure. Thiazide diuretics decrease active re-absorption of sodium and chloride ions by inhibiting the sodium/chloride co-transporter in the distal convoluted tubule. They also increase potassium ion loss. Thiazide diuretics decrease the blood volume by diuresis and are used to decrease blood pressure. The combination of a peripherally acting antiadrenergic agents with thiazide diuretics is used to treat hypertension.
