Health Tip: Acne Has Lasting Effects

Posted 15 Dec 2015 by Drugs.com

-- Acne may be most visible on the skin, but for many people, its effects are greater than just temporary blemishes. Acne can lead to these physical and emotional issues, says the American Academy of Dermatology: Developing poor self-esteem and isolation. Developing depression, which can become severe. Developing dark spots that remain after acne has cleared. These may last for months or years. Developing scars. Read more

Worse Psoriasis, Less Healthy Arteries, Study Finds

Posted 8 Oct 2015 by Drugs.com

THURSDAY, Oct. 8, 2015 – The skin disorder psoriasis appears linked with artery inflammation, raising the odds for heart disease, a new study says. "As the amount of psoriasis increases, the amount of blood vessel inflammation increases," said senior investigator Dr. Nehal Mehta, a clinical investigator with the U.S. National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute. His team also found that even mild psoriasis may indicate an increased risk for heart attack and stroke. Just one psoriasis skin patch, or plaque, "might be biologically active, causing low-grade inflammation and starting a cascade, speeding up their blood vessel disease," Mehta said. "People really should know that psoriasis is not just a cosmetic disease," he added. However, these study findings only show an association between psoriasis and blood vessel inflammation, not a direct cause-and-effect relationship, Mehta said. His ... Read more

Newer Psoriasis Drugs May Lower Heart Attack Risk for Patients

Posted 20 Aug 2012 by Drugs.com

MONDAY, Aug. 20 – People with psoriasis who take a new class of drugs known as tumor necrosis factor (TNF) inhibitors may be at a lower risk for heart attack than their counterparts who only use topical medications to treat this inflammatory skin condition, a new study shows. And patients taking older systemic medicines and phototherapy may also have a reduced heart attack risk compared to those using topical preparations, the study found. Of 8,845 study participants, about 57 percent were treated with topical therapy only, 19 percent received a TNF inhibitor for at least two months and about 24 percent were treated with other medications or phototherapy. People who were treated with TNF inhibitors had a 50 percent lower risk, and those treated with other psoriasis drugs or phototherapy had a 46 percent lower risk for heart attack, than those who used topical medications alone. Acne, Psoriasis Meds Don't Raise Fracture Risk

Posted 17 May 2010 by Drugs.com

MONDAY, May 17 – Patients who take drugs like Accutane and Soriatane for acne and psoriasis don't seem to be at higher risk of breaking bones, a new study finds, even though similar dietary supplements have been linked to fractures. Accutane and Soriatane – known generically as isotretinoin and acitretin – are similar to vitamin A, which has been linked to broken bones when taken in high doses. The drugs themselves, which are used to treat acne and psoriasis, have been connected to lower levels of bone density. In the new study, researchers at Aarhus University Hospital in Denmark studied 124,655 patients with broken bones from the year 2000. They compared them to people of the same age and sex who didn't have broken bones. The researchers found that the drugs didn't boost the risk of broken bones, even at high doses. The study appears in the May issue of the Archives of Dermatology. ... Read more
