For Epilepsy "I have taken phenytoin for nearly 3 years . I am now on 500mg which does concern me even though it controls my seizures really well. So far I have swollen gums and some memory and motivation problem, although I am 58 so that might account for that."

For Seizures "I have been on phentyoin sodium for a long time and at first it didn't help right away but, my doctors increased my meds and I'm proud and glad to say I haven't had any attacks in the last 5 yrs. I get my levels checked and I'm able to do things I thought I would never get to do. I'm glad my doctors made the change. and the meds have never giving me any troubles none of the side effects have taken place and I'm 39 and been on it for 15yrs grand total. I'm pleased."

Phenytek (phenytoin) for Epilepsy "I've been taking this medicine for years. I was having difficulties keeping my medicine levels in the proper zone. The extended release has been great. I'm in a small group of people who need their Dilantin level slightly above the 10-20 range. I'm able to stay at 20-22 with the proper dosages that have been prescribed for me. I cannot take the generic brand. When I was on the generic, my levels were not as stable."

For Myotonia Congenita "My brother and I both have Myotonia Congenita and were diagnosed around 8 and 10 years old, respectively. We were put on Quinine back in the 60s. It certainly worked, but the side effects were feeling super racey, hyper, and dry-mouthed, so uncomfortable that we had to lay down shortly after taking it before going to school. It'd be another 30 years of taking nothing till we were introduced to phenytoin. It took a good month before we noticed a difference - he was on 400mg and I 200mg - as his symptoms were worse due to alcoholism. The worse you treat your body, the worse Myotonia Congenital is, though it certainly made a marked improvement in both of our lives. I went off of it every 3 years or so (for a year) to see how my body would react without it. I'd get by, but the older I got, the more my Myotonia symptoms became pronounced. Now at 70, I've had to up the dosage to 300mg to avoid falls. Side effects? None. But that's not the case for everyone. I consider myself very fortunate."

For Seizures "I have been taking Dilantin 100mg x 4 for epilepsy since 1967 - 54 years! No seizures in over 44 years when I went off it for 7 mos. This has been the best drug invented for me. Have led a wonderful life, driving, healthy, and active. Finished graduate school and taught for 25 years. I defied my high school teacher's expectations when she told me I would never get a job or amount to anything with a seizure disorder. The occasional depression and tired feeling is offset with drinking lots of coffee, eating lots of greens and fruit, and exercise."

For Peripheral Neuropathy "Took Dilantin for 20+ years for sleeping issues. Quit working when Pfizer started to make it. Ended up with neuropathy in my feet, and phenytoin is on the list that can cause neuropathy. Old and outdated drug, also known as the ugly drug because it's known to cause abnormal bone growth in your face and elsewhere."

For Seizure Prophylaxis During or Following Neurosurgery "My father took Dilantin daily for several years to counter seizures caused by brain surgery. It worked well for him, for controlling seizures. However, he did say that it had a very negative effect on his teeth. 'Dilantin makes your teeth fall out,' he said. So, there's that, I guess."

Dilantin (phenytoin) for Seizures "On Dilantin extended plus phenobarbital for 47 years for seizures. Not an episode for 38 years. Requires regular check of blood level with adjustment when elevated. Excellent dental hygiene important. Bone loss after long term use with moderate anemia. These effects worth it for total control of episodes. Specialist prescribes brand only due to efficacy."
