Ponstel (mefenamic acid) for Period Pain "I have had severe menstrual pain since I was 13 yrs old. Nothing has ever worked except when I was on the birth control pill. Doctor put me on Ponstel and it only worked for the first day. On day 2, 3 and 4 of my period it didn't work at all. Doctor is going to keep me on Ponstel and also added Vicodin for the couple of "bad days". We will see if it works. It did work better then Celebrex (faster) that is."

For Period Pain "Guys I thought I was the only one. I’ve been taking mefenamic acid for like the past three periods and it doesn’t work at all for me. I end up on the floor crying my eyes out about to throw up. I’ve been thinking why would my doctors prescribe this to me?! Mind you I had to pay for this prescription in full and it wasn’t cheap. I guess I’ll try it a week before. Because I see a lot on here about how you should take it before so it can build up. So this is a warning for anyone out there thinking about using this medication make sure to do the research first."

For Period Pain "I’ve been taking them for over a year now during my periods. They have not been very helpful regarding my cramps and pain I get it but, do lighten my flow so I don’t feel as weak and tired anymore during my periods."

Ponstel (mefenamic acid) for Period Pain "This did not work at all. Not only did it not touch my severe menstrual cramps, but I experienced side effects from the drug - muscle weakness in my legs. My obgyn and I tried everything. Now, I take meloxicam every 24 hrs for first 1-3 days of period and take 2.5mg - 5mg hydrocodone acetaminophen on day 2 and 3 for breakthrough pain. It works very well."

For Period Pain "My periods have been bad I first got them (when I was 10) Was prescribed mefanamic acid but it's never helped (been using it for about 4 or 5 months), nor does ibuprofen, paracetamol or hot water bottles. The pain is bad enough that I vomit occasionally and I often struggle to move on my periods. It's bad enough that I get very depressed and also quite suicidal. Anyone got anything else that might help? I discussed birth control with my gp but he was hesitant as a result of my mental health, also need to ask for stronger pain relievers."

For Period Pain "Hi everyone, I have used mefenamic acid for period pain twice so far and will probably not be using it again. I will still give it a decent review since it helped a lot with my period pain and lessened the bleeding, but after taking one 500mg tablet the first time (with dinner) I got a stabbing pain in my stomach and severe nausea, however it went away after about an hour. After about 10 hours I started to just take ibuprofene for the rest of the period. Next time my period was a bit early so I had to take M. Acid for the pain again, used it twice with about 10 hours in between, ended up with stomach pain, nausea and diarrhea the next few days (still have it and my period is done). Hope it won't last..."

For Period Pain "After my second dose, I went to bed. I got up after a couple hours as I couldn’t sleep through the cramps. All of a sudden I had the worst pain I have ever experienced through my whole abdomen. I was on the floor about to black out or vomit from the pain, debating on calling an ambulance. The pain went away after several minutes thankfully, but I have never been in such agony. I won’t be taking this again."

For Period Pain "Have used almost all types of painkillers for period cramps but yesterday got ponstan after it was recommended by a pharmacist and it worked for me but the second day of taking ponstan it's not working even after adding another tablet it's not working am in a lot of pain right now having taken 2 500 mg ponstan I can't take another painkiller "

For Period Pain "I get extreme period cramps, I physically shake and I throw up. It’s horrible. I get period pains through out the month even when I’m not on my period but they aren’t as bad as they are when I’m actually on my period. I went to the doctor about this and they prescribed me Mefenamic Acid and it didn’t help with my pains at all. I felt even more sick when I took it and had no effect on me. Luckily I’ve had no bad side effects but I’ve now stopped taking it as it doesn’t work"

For Period Pain "Never use this drug mefenamic acid which I started using at 17age for super bad periods. From then it had started but I never noticed it's strong side effects..at the age 28 I understood I AM highly allergic to this "

For Period Pain "I've been taking 500mg Ponstan Forte/Mefenamic Acid for period cramps since I was 13 and now I'm 18. I only take one tablet on my first day when it's really painful, sometimes I take another the next day, but that's all I need (PERSONALLY). The pain goes away in 15-30 mins for me after I take it so I recommend you don't wait before taking it (I always do that lol) I never take anything else (paracetamol, ibuprofen etc). I think upper back ache/stiff back and indigestion are the only side effects I have around the same time as taking the tablet (then again they could be unrelated)."

For Period Pain "Before I started this medication I used to have very painful cramps, I have now started taking the medication 2 tablets, 3 times a day for the past 3 months. On the first month of trying them they were amazing I was pain free, but then the second and third month I began to experience some side effects. They seem to work for the first day however on the second, third and fourth day they seem to loose their potency. I now experience painful bloating, feeling worse before my period, headaches, eye aches and overall just feeling sick. Before these medication I never had any of these symptoms. The only thing it has helped with is that it has reduced the severity of my cramps however I still sometimes get them. Has anyone else had these symptoms ?"

For Period Pain "I had moderate to severe pain during my periods. I've been taking this medicine for 4 years now. I take two pills (250mg) when my period starts and continue with taking one pill every 6h for 3 days. It has helped me a lot."

For Period Pain "I've been to two doctors already asking them to prescribe something stronger for my cramps and they both gave me this. I don't know why I keep on getting these pills because they do absolutely nothing!! This is my second month using them and I'm definitely getting off them next month."

For Period Pain "When if first got my period I used to be able to use paracetamol and ibuprofen to take away the pain, but as the years went pass it no longer worked and I was being sick, shaking and in excruciating pain.So mefenamic acid was recommend and it has done nothing to help with the pain.The only good thing is that it shortens my period from 7 days down to 3/4 days.Ot has also made my back pain when I’m on my period worse, it’s gotten so bad that my back starts to seize up and I’m left curled up and crying."

For Period Pain "Worked like a dream when I would get crippling pain and heavy flow once a month. Sometimes I was naughty to take them with no food. The result over time was duodenal ulcers. Started as sharp pain below the rib cage near my heart and would be so painful before and after eating. A gastroscopy confirmed the ulcers and they healed once I got off the Ponstan and switched to Panadol. So if you are interested in taking this, make sure to eat a lot of food because this stuff can cause other issues if you are not careful."

For Period Pain "Well holy cow. I think this stuff works. I've always had very painful cramps. Birth control helped massively, but after my tubal I didn't want to be taking the pill anymore, so I just dealt with it. I tried NSAIDs, opiates, herbal remedies etc and nothing even took the edge off. The only thing that helped was pre-gaming Advil for several days, but that meant taking (and remembering to take) 6-8 Advils a day for several days. Recently, my GP advised I try mefenamic acid. I did not expect much. I tried it two months in a row and had minimal cramps. This latest time, as an experiment, I waited for The Big Cramp to start before taking a pill. Within 45 minutes, the cramps were gone. Having a pill that not only prevents cramps, but stops them once they've begun feels like a miracle."

For Period Pain "I woke up this morning clenching my stomach and even vomited from how bad my period pains were. I took the tablets and had a nap when I woke I had no pain and blood flow had reduced a lot too. "

Ponstel (mefenamic acid) for Period Pain "Does not work at all; on the top of all regular symptoms I got the significant side effects of a drug. Going back to Tylenol at least has no problem with side effects, works for pain a little."

For Period Pain "I suffer with very bad period pain so much so that I have been hospitalised with it! These pills not only help me with my bleeding (reduce it) they also solve my pain within 15 minutes!"

For Period Pain "I get severe cramping every month from periods as I have severe Stenosis of the Cervix. Ponstan is the only thing that relieves my cramping - it's a godsend!"
