Symptom Checker

Step 4: Read and complete the decision guide to learn more about your symptoms.

Hip Pain

You have indicated the following: you are younger than 55 years old, you have joint pain other than in the hip, there is pain when pressing over the hip area, and symptoms began suddenly.

Based on your answers, some of the most likely causes of your hip pain are:

  • fibromyalgia

  • rheumatoid arthritis

  • a viral infection (as with the severe aches and pains during the flu).

  • Tendonitis, bursitis, or a strain are possible, but would not explain pain in your other joints. Perhaps there is more than one of these conditions present at the same time.

Over-the-counter pain medicines, rest and ice may be helpful, but if symptoms persist, it is important that you see a physician for evaluation.
