Symptom Checker

Step 4: Read and complete the decision guide to learn more about your symptoms.

Fever in Adults

If your ear hurts and you have a fever, you could have an ear infection.

An infection of the inner ear is called otitis media; an infection in the outer part of the ear is called otitis externa (or swimmer's ear). Antibiotics are not always necessary for this, but it's a good idea to get checked by your doctor.

The next question deals with infections associated with a sore throat.

Do you have fever along with the following?

- Sore throat

- Profound fatigue

- Muscle aches

Yes, I have had some of those symptoms.

No, I haven't had any of those symptoms.
