For the Consumer

Applies to cyclopentolate ophthalmic: ophthalmic solution

Get emergency medical help if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction while taking cyclopentolate ophthalmic: hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.

Tell your doctor at once if you feel dizzy or have eye pain, blurred vision, or a rapid pulse right after receiving cyclopentolate eye drops.

Call your doctor if you have any of these serious side effects within a day or two after receiving cyclopentolate ophthalmic:

• blurred vision or light sensitivity that lasts longer than 48 hours after receiving cyclopentolate;

• fast or uneven heart rate;

• warmth, redness, or tingly feeling under your skin;

• severe skin rash;

• slow or shallow breathing; or

• hallucinations or unusual behavior (especially in children).

Less serious side effects of cyclopentolate ophthalmic may include:

• blurred vision;

• sensitivity to sunlight;

• mild stinging or burning in your eye; or

• swelling of the eyelids.

Respiratory

Respiratory side effects have included decreased secretion in the pharynx, bronchi, and nasal passages.

Cardiovascular

Cardiovascular side effects have included tachycardia and vasodilation.

Dermatologic

Dermatological side effects have included skin rash and decreased sweat gland secretion.

Gastrointestinal

Gastrointestinal side effects have included abdominal distention (in infants), diminished gastrointestinal motility, and decreased salivary secretion.

General

General side effects have included hyperpyrexia.

Genitourinary

Genitourinary side effects have included urinary retention.

Nervous system

Nervous system side effects have included ataxia, incoherent speech, restlessness, and seizures. Unusual drowsiness has also been reported.

Ocular

Ocular side effects have included increased intraocular pressure, burning, photophobia, blurred vision, irritation, hyperemia, conjunctivitis, blepharoconjunctivitis, punctate keratitis, and synechiae.

Psychiatric

Psychiatric side effects have included hallucinations, hyperactivity, disorientation as to time and place, and failure to recognize people.
