For Indigestion "omeprazole caused extreme anxiety, feeling like I am life is a struggle, panic attacks, weight loss(10kgs in 5 weeks), palpitations, chest and arm pain on left side, brain fog, weakness and chills in legs and arms, dizziness, nausea, general fatigue, numbness, flatulence, joint pain (hip) after gentle walks, forgetfulness, fear of eating. I have stopped cold turkey after having come across reviews of Omeprazole and Protonix which I took as well. Took Omeprazole for 2 weeks, got these symptoms, told the doctor who changed the med to be pantoprazole(protonix). The last 2.5 months or so have been the worst of my life so far, it has taken a toll on my family and work life too. Doctor thought I might need anti depressants given all the anxiety but after around a week or so of stopping these, I am starting to feel a bit better. So, I am not going to take anti anxiety related meds. It is a vicious cycle, PPIs cause depression and then you take depression meds that are difficult to stop!"

For GERD "I had a bad bout of reflux and the doctor prescribed 40 mg daily. I felt relief but about 2 weeks later I had blood in my urine. I went to the doctor right away because I was freaked out. I told them that I red blood in urine was a side effect but I had to do an ultrasound to check my kidneys and bladder as well as doing urinalysis. Thankfully all tests came back ok and the doctor told me to stop the omeprazole. No more blood! I also has increased anxiety and thought it was just nervousness because I was sick. Now after reading these posts I think it was the drug."

For GERD "Worst experience, only been 8 days and I feel breathless all day! I’ve had so many panic attacks which I think because of the breathlessness it has made me constantly anxious about it then causing panic attack, I have the worst headache, and my eyes just feel strange, only on 20 mg in morning! And I’m stopping it straight away! I’m sure it works well for some but it’s a no from me! My doctor told me to up it to 40mg as it’s just my GERD but I know it’s not!!"

For GERD "I had chest pains thought I'd pulled a muscle so took ibuprofen which gave me terrible indigestion, I went to the doctors he gave me omeprazole, it worked wonders for about 3 days then I started feeling sick, my body felt like it was shocking, I was cold couldn't sleep and I had terrible brain fog, I stopped taking it for 2 days but heartburn was awful so I started taking it again. I was prescribed 20mg twice a day so I thought I would just take one tablet in the morning, I was ok the first day but by the second all the horrible symptoms were back. I've been bake to the GP and he has given me Cimetidine instead this was great for the first day but by day 2 felt so I'll again. These meds are awful."

For GERD "Well, where do I start? I was experiencing a squeezing pain in the center of my chest and heart palpitations, and I was going to the hospital nearly every day. It was so bad that the pain felt suicidal like my heart was being squeezed. The doctors said it was probably acid reflux, which I thought was absolute nonsense because there was no real proof I had acid reflux. I'm 100% positive that acid reflux wouldn't cause this feeling I had in my chest. It felt more like it was heart-related. Anyhow, they prescribed me omeprazole, and I started taking it every day. After about a week, I felt like I was going to drop dead. Like no joke, I would wake up, and the feeling in my chest was unbearable like my heart was going to stop. I would wake up with a mouth full of spit, almost stopping me from breathing. I would have crazy chest pains, my heart would suddenly start beating very strangely, and I felt like any day could be my last day alive. The omeprazole also depleted my iron and vitamin D, making me anemic. It's poison."

For Gastritis/Duodenitis "I started taking omeprazole pill at 20mg dose It took a while to take some effect but still had breakthrough burning. 1 and a half weeks into taking this pill the horrendous side effects kicked in. I can’t even describe how horrible this medicine made me feel. I literally had the worst nausea imaginable. My stomach would literally spasm/convulse/ and tighten. Body fatigue to the point of nearly passing out at work. I’ve never felt so sickly in my entire life. I lost my appetite. I lost weight drastically (20 lbs in the span of 2 weeks). My doctor told me to try 40mg because of the breakthrough burning and that’s when I nearly checked myself into the ER. My coworkers were very concerned with me not looking or feeling like my typical self. That’s when I stopped taking the pill cold turkey. Within a couple days I regained my appetite and started eating and feeling better with no more nausea and stomach tightness. Honestly beware of this pill."

For GERD "I've been taking this wretched drug for nearly a year now and only just realized it's causing all these insane side effects that have sent me to the ER multiple times. Since taking this drug I've had horrific pains in my shoulder and left side chest (6 occasions attended AE due to thinking it was a heart attack or something), tinnitus and general ear infection/problems in both ears randomly, nausea and dizziness on occasion, liver pain/disease which is getting worse despite doing everything to make it better, itchiness on my scalp and back, pain in my ribs and sides, stiff neck, increased nervousness and anxiety, memory isn't as sharp anymore, constant feeling of impending doom and a multitude of other horrible side effects. Having been reading all these comments on various forums recently due to a particularly bad few weeks of pain and misery, it's clear that Omeprazole has had a big part to play in ruining my life this last year."

For GERD "I was on pain medicine for a kidney stone which caused severe stomach problems So MD put me on Omeprazole for 10 years. Had severe pain in my ribs. Went to the doctor continuously and he never suspected the medicine. 6 months after I stopped the medicine the pain in my ribs disappeared. Had severe pain in my shoulders and hips for 10 years. Was endlessly tired. The doctor never suspected the medicine. I went to him for years because of the fatigue. Another doctor finally diagnosed the side effect of B12 deficiency caused by omeprazole. Now have osteoporosis and have had three broken bones in the past three years. Omeprazole caused me to have strong sugar cravings because I wasn’t getting enough nutrients to my body. I now have numbness and tingling in my hands and feet and may have lupus"

For GERD "I was diagnosed with acid reflux. I took 20 mg a day for 8 months. It worked fine, though I had a constant dull ache in my stomach. I decided to go off of it and I had the worst acid reflux I have ever had. I could not eat for weeks and lost 25 pounds. I completely changed my diet to low acid, got rid of all sugar and caffeine. A month later I slowly started getting better. It is now about a month since I stopped. My stomach is better, though still aches. I do not have much acid. I do have lots of wind passing. My doctor did endoscopy. Normal. He wants an MRI for pancreatic cancer. He did not believe me when I said that I thought the weight loss was from hyperacidity as a result of going off omeprazole (I read about this everywhere as a common side effect of cold turkey stopping) and recommended that I go back on Omeprazole! I am so glad I am off this stuff and returning to semblance of normality. Shocked that doctors are not concerned about this drug."

For Barrett's Esophagus "I was taking omeprazole for GERD and after 6 months of taking it , a primary doctor said to stop taking this for awhile because of the long term side effects . Of course I did and only had occasional heartburn. But unknown to me at the time, I had developed Barrett’s esophagus and started having problems with acid reflux again . After an EDG, they diagnosed me with Barrett’s and to go back on esomeprazole 40mg. But I didn’t stay on it for long because I was thinking about the long term side effects . Wished I would of, really wished I would of stayed on omeprazole because now after a gastric ulcer, the surgeon discovered esophageal cancer. So after cancer treatments of radiation and chemo, I am currently taking 40mg of this again, twice daily . I truly wish I would of stayed on it, thus possibly avoiding esophageal cancer"

For GERD "Was put on 20mg of this for about 2 1/2 months after experiencing intense daily heartburn and acid reflux. I had taken it before for only a week and it helped so Dr prescribed it again. I have never felt what has been happening to me before. I stopped in May and it is now the end of September. Anxiety, shortness of breath, joint pain, brain fog and inability to focus my thoughts. Feeling unable to control my thoughts. Nausea, discomfort, fear, and hopelessness. When I first stopped, symptoms would be gone for a few days then back. Around August, I would go weeks without symptoms but about a week before my period, they would start coming back. Began seeing a functional medicine dr who provided me with vitamin D, trace mineral supplement and iron which I started taking in August. So afraid this is going to happen for the rest of my life and I am a single mother. Any other woman experience a uptick in their symptoms around their period? This is terrifying way to feel."

For GERD "I’ve never had anxiety or depression in my life. I started omeprazole after my dr. diagnosed me with GERD and it is the biggest mistake I never knew I could make. This drug should be illegal and I cannot stress enough to not use this. I’m currently off of it and trying to get my body back to a state of normality with it being a struggle that I shouldn’t have to face."

Prilosec (omeprazole) for GERD "Prilosec has worked for me 90 percent of the time for the past eight years. My one and only complaint is: Why does it have to be packaged like it is gold. First a large box with three smaller boxes in that and then the pills individually sealed in foil sheets. What a pain to get all this open and just think of the amount of waste to the landfills. I called the company and they said they do this packaging for safety reasons. Many, many more dangerous other meds are not packaged like this. Please get those pills into a bottle."

For GERD "I have been taking Prilosec for approximately 5 1/2 weeks because I had very bad heartburn due to a drug called Naproxen (I have a hiatal hernia). Over the few weeks I noticed that I have become extremely nervous, insomnic, foggy concentration and blurred vision. I was on Prilosec a few years back and it did not cause this reaction. At one point the doctor had me double the 40mg doseage and I was taking 80mg a day. I lost my appetite and also lost approximately 30lbs since I began this treatment. Currently, due to the insomnia I am now taking sleep aids which I do not want to be on either. I get approximately 3-5hrs of sleep a day. Today will be my first day not taking the prilosec but I want to know, how long was it before people started feeling better. It says you should taper off so I will take it every other day for about 1 week to see if I feel any better."

Prilosec (omeprazole) for Duodenal Ulcer "DO. NOT. TAKE. HORRIFYING. Took the pills against my better judgment for a nagging ulcer /gastritis per my doc, I usually prefer a holistic route. Mistake. 5 days in, an ER trip in an ambulance from sudden dizziness, painful pounding chest, panic like I was dying, extreme sweating, numb hands and feet and pulse through the roof. Tests showed nothing but ended up back in the ER after night after night of undeniable horrific panic, sweating, extreme anxiety (I have never experienced anxiety or anything panic attack related before in my life), claustrophobic and anxiety ridden nervous thoughts that are unshakable. No sleep for days. With two toddlers it was torture. It could not have been anything but these awful pills obviously. I quit the pills, am seeing an acupuncturist and herbs to detox. Better but still a work in progress. Please do NOT risk your mental health over this poison. Not worth it one bit."

Prilosec (omeprazole) for GERD "I've had GERD since 1999 and, in 2016, I was being tested for all sorts of GI conditions because of the symptoms I was experiencing. My GI doc at the time told me to take Prilosec every day to control nausea and acid reflux. I took it for less than a week and had to discontinue because, every time I ate, I felt like I had a brick sitting in my stomach. It felt like the food would just sit there, undigested and it was very painful. I've done better with other PPIs."

For Hiatal Hernia "I was taking Ranitidine (zantac) twice a day until I heard bad news about it. Now I'm on 20mg Omeprazole once a day. I have been on it about 7 months. Very hard to pin point exactly how it helps except one area. That is the burning in my stomach is not as bad. I still have a lot of belching. Also a feeling of something stuck in my throat at times followed by coughing. And a shortness of breath. All seems to be tied to same problem, hiatal hernia. But for sure hardly no burning feeling in stomach and no flaring up of my ulcer. The hardest thing for me to deal with is how well my meds are working on their intended targets because I take 14 diff ones!! Bottom line, for sure Omeprazole does help my stomach area, acid, etc..."

For Gastritis/Duodenitis "For those asking how long it takes to recover from this awful drug. I had all the symptoms described by others, but probably worse. Was only on 40mg a day but for over a year, really couldn’t understand why I was feeling that ill. When it clicked about the Omeprazole I stopped them after consulting the GP. Who say stop immediately by the way. I began to feel better from day one but because my system was so poisoned by this drug it has taken over a year to get where I am now. Which is around 95% recovered. Feel so much better than when I was taking the stuff. I manage my Gerd/acid reflux by watching my diet and alcohol consumption. Stick with it you will get better."

For Stomach Ulcer "I was prescribed 20 mg of omeprazole for what I was diagnosed with last week as stomach ulcers. Within 4 hours I had searing back pain. I’m talking labor pains strong. I thought my kidneys were having a bad reaction so I drank and drank and drank water as much as possible. Another 4 hours later it was 50% better but then the panic and anxiety attacks set in. I thought I was crazy until I started doing research. If something seems odd, look up the side effects as there are MANY!"

For GERD "This medication omeprazole was / is awful. Do. Not. Take. I’ve been taking it daily for almost three weeks because it does help with acid reflux- at first. After a few weeks of taking it I noticed severe might sweats, stomach pain, blurred vision, dizziness, vertigo, nausea, vomiting - the list goes on. I had to be off work for 2 days because I was so weak/ tired from this medication I couldn’t function. I didn’t feel like eating anything or drinking anything because I was afraid I would vomit it all back up. Your head feels terrible, worst migraine I’ve ever experienced, body rash... severe fatigue. I am going to stop taking it starting tomorrow and see how it goes. When I contacted my Dr. she seemed to think it was not a big deal. This pill is miserable. Do not take this pill."
