"After heavy bleeding for 3 weeks, doctor prescribed 40mg megestrol, once a day, for 7 days. Bleeding did not fully stop, but it was light enough to resume daily activities comfortably. I experienced increased appetite, but I have been actually losing weight. Energy levels were fine - probably better since the bleeding decreased. I also experienced some restlessness and trouble sleeping, but that could be attributed to other medical concerns on my mind."

"Given magestrol 40 mg twice a day after Dand C.i started bleeding after 45 days of using it, weight gain, too much anger Also even hair a started falling out. Very bad experience with it. Doctor gives me progesterone 200 mg and still after taking it since 9 days bleeding is still on. I don't know when will this stop but I have the progesterone for 14 days and then stop it and see what will happen !"

"About two weeks ago I had to be hospitalized because I was bleeding severely and my blood level (which I may be saying that wrong) dropped down to 5.4. I had to have a blood transfusion and they gave me several rounds of medication within two days to see what would stop the bleeding. The one that worked was the Megestrol 40 mg. It says to take 4 times daily and my doctor wants me to take the medication until my next appointment which is 04/04/2017. I stopped bleeding the day that they gave it to me and for about two days I took as instructed and now I take one pill every other day from fear that if I stop completely that the bleeding may come again. So far I have not had any issues and I've been taking for about 2 weeks now."

"I started spotting in May or June. Eventually it got heavier and heavier to the point I could not wear tampons and I had to double up on pads. I started to pass blood clots like I have never seen before. This is disgusting but it was to the point where when I was standing up I could feel something trying to exit my body and would have to run to the bathroom. I went to my OB had an ultra sound and was diagnosed with endometrial hyperplasia. I also had a biopsy that came back normal (no cancer). Praise the lord. I took megestrol 40mg 1x per day. It did almost work immediately however it made me soooo tired that all I wanted to do was sleep. Once the bleeding stopped I took it for about 1 more week and stopped the meds. Well here we are 3 weeks later back to same old. Taking the med again. I decided ablation may be best for me and will talk to my OB in 4 days. Hopefully it works the 2nd time. I don't want to take this anymore."

"I started taking this medication for heavy bleeding. I was having periods that lasted 9 - 10 days it went to 2 weeks, then 3 weeks, now a month and counting. I noticed that when I skipped a dose or 2 the bleeding decreased. So I did some research and found that one of the side effects was increased bleeding. I also had night sweats and felt thirsty all the time like I was dehydrated. An ablation has been recommended but now I'm not sure if it's needed due to the side effects."

"I started this medication for abnormally heavy bleeding and I took it before bed. It made me drowsy but by morning no more bleeding which feels great. I noticed a little pink once after using bathroom and now that’s it’s been a week and a half I’m using regular size tampons. It’s not filling them at all. It’s like am I starting my period or just spotting, is it going to get heavy or stop? Not sure what to expect. I was so happy it was working so not sure it is now. Been thinking about ablation or hysterectomy. Just love being women yay"

"I started the medication June 20 on my Day 2 which is normally about 150 ml or more of blood, it stopped for 12 hrs. Day 3 I took and it stopped but then came back. I stopped taking meds. By Day 12 of bleeding went to see ob and he said I wasn't taking meds right. (I only wanted to take a couple of days since I was traveling to NC and would not be able to stop every hour). Anyways, I went back to taking 40 mg a day, no more bleeding and my period is 7 days late. I figure I have 9 days of meds left maybe it will start then. Side Effects: severe stomach pains, blurred vision, dizziness, leg cramps). Good thing it has helped I was scheduled to either do ablation or hysterectomy. I normally loose 242-300 ml of blood a cycle, I use the diva cup, plus have to wear a diaper."

"58 years old and still having a period with heavy bleeding and clots due to fibroids. FSH and estrogen test results show no sign of menopause happening soon. Starting this medication, 3 days 3 pills each day then, 2 days 2 pills each day , then next 7 days/1 pill per day. Just finished this pill cycle and no bleeding. I have a second prescription but I always want to eat on this medication and fighting not to eat all day is just wearing me out, along with chest pains and tired. And oh did I mention eating.....gained 5 pounds. Adominal Hysterectomy in 2 months."

"I started this medication upon finding out I had PCOS. My OB prescribes progesterone for heavy bleeding but it did not work. I ended up going to the ER for low hemoglobin due to constant bleeding and was giving megestrol. It worked immediately but was told to stop taking if trying to have a baby. My husband and I want to try but 2 weeks after stopping my period started again. I tried taking it again to see if it would stop and 2 weeks later it hasn’t. Seems like it works the first round, after that it isn’t effective. I did gain 12 pounds very fast while on it."

"I was put on Meagace 40mg tab twice a day for 60 days to stop abnormal bleeding. It worked for the first 45 days but I then began to bleed again. My doctor put me back on the medication but I am still bleeding. It no longer works. I wonder if I should increase my dose."

"I am 46yrs old having my period 34 days and for over two weeks with extremely heavy bleeding , going through ultra tampon every hour. I also had clots the size muchin hole donuts. So My doctor put me on Megestrol 40mg once a day on 12-4 and by that evening the bleeding slowed down so much that I only had to use a panty liner for spotting. I have been taking it for only four days. I am grateful for this medication. Hopefully when I return to my doctor surgery is not an issue anymore. And this stops my period for good."

The bleeding has stopped, but I’m still weak from all the bleeding. I had a iron treatment on Thursday so hopefully it help soon. For as the pill goes everything have stopped hopefully I can get back regular & the doctor can figure what what’s going on with me. This is so scary."

"UPDATE....I went to visit my OB because as you can see in my other comment from 2019-08-01 under Reenee, I started bleeding again once I stopped and started the medicine for a 2nd time. My Dr told me to start taking 2 per day. It did stop the clotting but I still bled for a full week before it finally stopped. So it did work the 2nd time just with an extra dose and it took longer than the 1st time. The side effect were a little different the 2nd time. I was not as tired but I did have some chest pain, gas, frequent urination, maybe a UTI and I was super thirsty. End result is that I am scheduled for surgery on Wednesday. I am getting the Nova sure (abalation) done. My OB said its very effective and I should experience light or no bleeding at all. Fingers crossed!!!!"

"Hey everyone, I am 27 years old and have been dealing with abnormal uterine bleeding for a good chunk of my 20s. This is my 2nd time taking megace, I took it I believe 1 1/2 years ago then transitioned to norethindrone. It worked wonders. I started bleeding again because of fertility treatment, I was still on norethindrone to control my period so could try to get pregnant. I only did the fertility treatment for three trials. And decided that I will wait a little longer. So long story short I was back on norethindrone but for some reason it just wasn’t working. So ob gave me megace and like before it worked wonders. On top of taking megace I had a D&C, and it’s been about 2 weeks and the bleeding has lightened to almost no bleeding at all. I am on 40mg 2 a day so 80mg. If you are having abnormal bleeding this drug will absolutely work. Also I’ve experienced minimum side effects."

"I have suffered with abnormal uterine bleeding for 3 years, I had a cyst removed in March the doctor said that was the problem within a week of the surgery the bleeding came back. I was put on megestrol until I can have my hysterectomy it stopped the bleeding instantly for 2 days but it came back today heavy to the point I’m changing my pad every hour. I’m so fed up with this and actually looking forward to surgery so I can get my life back"

"I was prescribed the medication for relief of heavy bleeding during my period due to fibroids and adenomyosis. The 1st and 2nd months were wonderful! I took it the first day of my cycle until the end of my cycle. It actually stopped the bleeding completely. After the 2nd month, I had some spotting and my blood pressure elevated. I stopped taking it after my cycle and my pressure went to normal. I started spotting that increased over time and resumed but had to stop because I realized it raised my blood pressure. I've now been bleeding for 2 weeks and had to go on amlodipine to lower my blood pressure because it has not gone down."

"I had a D&C in January 2023 and they found 4 polyps on my uterus lining and a lot of thickness. I was prescribed this medication beginning of February. My ob-gyn put me on megestrol 40mg 4 times a day due to endometrial hyperplasia. Starting on March 21, 2023, I started bleeding so I came off the medication due to my obgyn said I shouldn't be bleeding any. Well, I go into the office in April and he wants another D&C and told me this should stop the bleeding. Well, I had the D&C 2 weeks ago, and guess what? I am bleeding worst than I had ever bled. With clots and extreme cramps and heavy bleeding. I honestly think this medication has messed me up big time. I have been bleeding for 2 months and my ob-gyn still doesn't understand why I am bleeding. He said I shouldn't be bleeding at all. All he can say is I am a special case and prescribed the same medication again for another 3 months and I am not going to take it again!! Bad side effects!"

"Started taking megestrol in July for heavy menstrual cycles. When I first started taking it I thought...wow this is my miracle drug, stopped the heavy bleeding to almost nothing. That took place for about 3 and a half weeks, I then noticed I had been on my menstrual all that time. The 4th week while still taking megestrol I had the biggest blood clot! I was like omg!!! After that is slowed back down but I still get blobs of blood. And did I mention I have been on menstuating 57 days and counting before megestrol the longest was 22 days My doctor didn't seem shocked. I have been begging for a hysterectomy! I had to take megestrol for a month first Second get a D & C Then they will see if insurance covers surgery Omggggg I have no life"

"I’m 24 years old, been bleeding for 3 1/2 months, just got prescribed this pill on Thursday and today is Tuesday and I only stopped bleeding for one day and my bleeding hasn’t changed at all It’s actually gotten a tad bit heavier. Idk what to do, my gyn told me it’ll take 2-3 days to stop and it’s going on day 5 of taking this pill. I'm a tad bit worried because it took me literally 2 months to even be seen by my gyne because it was so backed up."

"I was bleeding very heavy, I could soak through a super plus tampon and a huge after pregnancy pad within minutes. I was passing clots so big they wouldn’t fit down the shower drain. My doctor put me on 40mg of Megestrol 1x a day over 3 months ago, so far I had 2 days in a row of light spotting. I love this stuff!!!! I’m actually taking this instead of getting a full hysterectomy. My only concern is I had laparoscopic gallbladder surgery about a week ago and I’ve had some pretty intense uterine pain with heavy bleeding and blood clots since. I stopped taking the Megestrol for a few days thinking nature would run it’s course, I started taking it again and the uterine pain started back up. I hope this surgery didn’t wreck Megestrol for me."

"Started bleeding 2 weeks after taking it. It was like a little bit. It felt like I peed myself and when I was able to go to the bathroom it was all over my legs and running down. I was so glad that I was wearing black pants when it happen. It was a nightmare. Still currently on my cycle. Been on it 11 days and counting. These do not work. I was so excited not to have periods only for me to feel like something is wrong when nothing was. Just a heavy period that’s lasting more than 5 days."

"I'm 29 and hope this works. Bleeding for months at a time, no energy or appetite has really been draining. It is day 2 of the 40mg once a day. I felt great for the first time in a while. Was able to get out of bed, cook and do a little grocery shopping. Not feeling 100% yet, I'm just grateful for any improvements right now."

"40 mg once a day stopped my bleeding before my open myomectomy to remove my fibroids. I took it for 3 weeks before my procedure and was able to keep on working and performing (I’m a singer) before my operation. This medication stopped my bleeding better than the Mirena IUD and other BC pills while I had my 10cm fibroid inside of me. My appetite didn’t really change and I did not gain weight. I highly recommend this pill vs other options."

Megace (megestrol) "I've always had heavy bleeding and clotting the size of baseballs. I had my first daughter in 2020 at the age of 27 and previously thought I could not conceive since I'd never gotten pregnant before (not really a fan of contraceptives in long-term relationships). Newly married and had no luck getting pregnant, I began treatment for a tissue/mass found in my ultrasounds, my GYN prescribed me Megace and advised me to take 2/day to hopefully stop the bleeding. I was hesitant to take it after reading reviews and finally took my dose as it was getting closer to my next period. It made me feel horrible and nauseous, couldn't do anything but sleep, and had brain fog. I never took it again. I wanted to explore getting a DandC and decided I wouldn't take the medication and planned to have a f/u visit with my GYN to discuss alternatives. Well... 2 1/2 weeks later and 3 days late on my period, I took a pregnancy test and it was positive. My theory: I believe Megace somehow helped me conceive during ovulation."
