Serious side effects of ThyroShield

Along with its needed effects, potassium iodide (the active ingredient contained in ThyroShield) may cause some unwanted effects. Although not all of these side effects may occur, if they do occur they may need medical attention.

Check with your doctor as soon as possible if any of the following side effects occur while taking potassium iodide:

Less common

  • hives
  • joint pain
  • swelling of arms, face, legs, lips, tongue, and/or throat
  • swelling of lymph glands

With long-term use

Other side effects of ThyroShield

Some side effects of potassium iodide may occur that usually do not need medical attention. These side effects may go away during treatment as your body adjusts to the medicine. Also, your health care professional may be able to tell you about ways to prevent or reduce some of these side effects.

General

The most frequently reported adverse reactions have included stomach upset, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, skin rash, and salivary gland swelling or tenderness.[Ref]

Hypersensitivity

Hypersensitivity reactions such as skin rashes, swollen salivary glands, headache, bronchospasm and gastrointestinal disturbances can be mild or severe and may be dose dependent.

Endocrine

Hyperthyroidism, iodine induced autoimmunity (Grave's and Hashimoto type), toxic nodular goitre and iodine-induced hypothyroidism have been reported as side effects of iodine therapy.
