For the Consumer

Applies to phenylephrine / pyrilamine: oral liquid, oral suspension, oral tablet, oral tablet chewable extended release

Get emergency medical help if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction while taking phenylephrine / pyrilamine: hives; difficult breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.

Stop using this medication and call your doctor at once if you have a serious side effect such as:

  • fast or uneven heart rate;

  • mood changes;

  • tremor, seizure (convulsions);

  • easy bruising or bleeding, unusual weakness;

  • urinating less than usual or not at all;

  • feeling short of breath; or

  • dangerously high blood pressure (severe headache, blurred vision, buzzing in your ears, anxiety, chest pain, uneven heartbeats, seizure).

Less serious side effects of phenylephrine / pyrilamine may include:

  • dizziness, drowsiness;

  • dry mouth, nose, or throat;

  • constipation;

  • blurred vision; or

  • feeling nervous or restless.

Cardiovascular

Cardiovascular side effects have included hypotension, hypertension, cardiac arrhythmias and palpitations.

Dermatologic

Dermatologic side effects have included urticaria, drug rash, photosensitivity and pruritus.

Gastrointestinal

Gastrointestinal side effects have included epigastric discomfort, anorexia, vomiting, diarrhea, and constipation.

Genitourinary

Genitourinary side effects have included urinary frequency and difficult urination.

Nervous system

Nervous system side effects have included drowsiness, sedation, disturbed coordination, tremor, irritability, insomnia, nervousness, convulsions, headache, euphoria, and dysphoria.

Ocular

Ocular side effects have included visual disturbances.

Hematologic

Hematologic side effects have included hemolytic anemia, thrombocytopenia, and agranulocytosis.

Respiratory

Respiratory side effects have included tightness of chest, wheezing, and shortness of breath.

General

General side effects have included dryness of mucous membranes.
