Applies to dalfampridine: oral tablet extended release

Along with its needed effects, dalfampridine (the active ingredient contained in Ampyra) may cause some unwanted effects. Although not all of these side effects may occur, if they do occur they may need medical attention.

Check with your doctor immediately if any of the following side effects occur while taking dalfampridine:

More common
  • Bladder pain
  • bloody or cloudy urine
  • difficult, burning, or painful urination
  • frequent urge to urinate
  • lower back or side pain
Less common
  • Blurred vision
  • burning, crawling, itching, numbness, prickling, "pins and needles", or tingling feelings
  • difficulty controlling your bladder or bowels
  • difficulty walking
  • feeling sad or depressed
  • forgetful
  • muscle cramps
  • numbness or tingling in your arms, legs, or face
  • slurred speech or problems with swallowing
  • unusual tiredness or weakness
Incidence not known
  • Cough
  • dizziness
  • fast heartbeat
  • hives
  • itching
  • puffiness or swelling of the eyelids or around the eyes, face, lips, or tongue
  • shortness of breath
  • skin rash
  • tightness in the chest

Get emergency help immediately if any of the following symptoms of overdose occur while taking dalfampridine:

Symptoms of overdose
  • Confusion
  • epileptic seizure that will not stop
  • increased sweating
  • memory loss
  • problems with memory
  • reduced awareness
  • seizures
  • weakness

Some side effects of dalfampridine may occur that usually do not need medical attention. These side effects may go away during treatment as your body adjusts to the medicine. Also, your health care professional may be able to tell you about ways to prevent or reduce some of these side effects.   • Headache
  • lack or loss of strength
  • nausea
  • trouble sleeping
Less common
  • Back pain
  • constipation
  • fever
  • headache
  • muscle aches
  • sore throat
  • stuffy or runny nose

For Healthcare Professionals

Applies to dalfampridine: oral tablet extended release

Renal

Renal side effects including urinary tract infection (12%) have been reported.

General

General side effects including insomnia (9%) and asthenia (7%) have been reported.

Nervous system

Nervous system side effects including dizziness (7%), headache (7%), balance disorder (5%), multiple sclerosis relapse (4%), and paresthesia (4%) have been reported.

Gastrointestinal

Gastrointestinal side effects including nausea (7%), constipation (3%), dyspepsia (2%), and pharyngolaryngeal pain (2%) have been reported.

Musculoskeletal

Musculoskeletal side effects including back pain (5%) have been reported.

Respiratory

Respiratory side effects including nasopharyngitis (4%) have been reported.

Genitourinary

Genitourinary side effects have been have reported in animal studies which noted a significant increase in uterine polyps at the highest dose tested.
