For the Consumer

Applies to brompheniramine / phenylephrine: oral capsule extended release, oral elixir, oral liquid, oral suspension extended release, oral tablet chewable, oral tablet chewable extended release, oral tablet extended release

Get emergency medical help if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction while taking brompheniramine / phenylephrine: hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.

Stop using this medication and call your doctor at once if you have a serious side effect such as:

  • fast, pounding, or uneven heartbeat;

  • severe dizziness, anxiety, restless feeling, or nervousness;

  • easy bruising or bleeding, unusual weakness, fever, chills, body aches, flu symptoms;

  • nausea, upper stomach pain, itching, loss of appetite, dark urine, clay-colored stools, jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes); or

  • dangerously high blood pressure (severe headache, blurred vision, buzzing in your ears, anxiety, confusion, chest pain, shortness of breath, uneven heartbeats, seizure).

Less serious side effects of brompheniramine / phenylephrine may include:

  • drowsiness or dizziness;

  • blurred vision;

  • dry mouth, nose, or throat;

  • mild stomach pain, constipation;

  • problems with memory or concentration;

  • feeling restless or excited (especially in children);

  • sleep problems (insomnia); or

  • warmth, redness, or tingly feeling under your skin.

Gastrointestinal

Gastrointestinal side effects have included nausea, epigastric distress, anorexia, vomiting, diarrhea, and constipation.

Cardiovascular

Cardiovascular side effects have included hypotension, palpitations, tachycardia, and extrasystoles.

Genitourinary

Genitourinary side effects have included urinary frequency, difficult urination, urinary retention, and early menses.

Respiratory

Respiratory side effects have included thickening of bronchial secretions, tightness of chest, wheezing, and nasal stuffiness.

Hematologic

Hematologic side effects have included hemolytic anemia, thrombocytopenia and agranulocytosis.

Nervous system

Nervous system side effects have included headache, sedation, sleepiness, dizziness, disturbed coordination, fatigue, confusion, restlessness, excitation, nervousness, tremor, irritability, insomnia, euphoria, paresthesias, vertigo, hysteria, neuritis and convulsions.

Ocular

Ocular side effects have included blurred vision and diplopia.

Dermatologic

Dermatologic side effects have included photosensitivity, excessive perspiration, and flushing.

General

General side effects have included chills, and dryness of the mouth, nose and throat.

Hypersensitivity

Hypersensitivity side effects have included urticaria, drug rash, and anaphylactic shock.
