Thiazide diuretics

A drug may be classified by the chemical type of the active ingredient or by the way it is used to treat a particular condition. Each drug can be classified into one or more drug classes.

Thiazide diuretics decrease active re-absorption of sodium and chloride ions by inhibiting the sodium/chloride co-transporter in the distal convoluted tubule. They also increase potassium ion loss. Thiazide diuretics decrease the blood volume by diuresis and are used in the treatment of hypertension.
