"Anyone who is complaining of the side effects of metronidazole doesn’t have a dental root abscess! After 5 days of what can only be described as 'a nightmare of pain' and amoxicillin and every painkiller known to man doing zero for me, I finally got given metronidazole which has worked! Thank the Lord. Didn’t notice any effects and even if I had would take them over dental abscess pain anytime."

"I have never experienced dental pain like this before. I started 200mg metronidazole last Thursday and then was switched to 400mg yesterday morning after my 4th visit to the dentist. Cocodymol and ibuprofen are not working for pain. I literally have to wait for the antibiotics to work. After taking a total of 4 tablets of the 400mg, I believe I'm feeling some type of relief. I've been told by many clinicians to hang in there, which I plan on doing. The pain is unreal. I agree with the man who said, 'anyone complaining about the med does not have a dental abscess!' I would give birth 10 times over to never be in this type of pain again."

Flagyl (metronidazole) "I've been in agony with a toothache for two days. I couldn't sleep, nothing. Last night, I took 500mg of Flagyl a few hours before I went to bed, slept all night, and this morning my mouth isn't even sore. I’ll continue to take it for a week to make sure it kills the bacteria, but so far I like it better than any other antibiotic I've taken for an infected tooth!"

"Ok, so I am allergic to penicillin, so I have no choice but to take this antibiotic, but I would happily take it anyway over a dental infection any day! It usually takes about 2-3 days to kick in for me, some people sooner and some longer, but it does work! As for the side effects, please don’t let these comments put you off as medication works differently for everybody! I do get a bit of an upset stomach and a weird taste in the mouth, but it’s nothing that’s unbearable or unmanageable. I am still able to go about my day, and if you are in true pain of a tooth infection, then I think you would take a bit of a dodgy stomach over that unbearable pain!"

"Had infection in tooth root canal which had been treated several years previously. My face was swollen, and the pain was waking me every night. I was taking ibuprofen and paracetamol concurrently every 4 hours to ease the pain, but it didn't work. I couldn't eat on that side and to touch my gums and even that whole side of my face was excruciating. I am allergic to Penicillin and its derivatives. I succumbed to a visit to the weekend emergency dentist, and they prescribed Metronidazole, 400mg 3 per day for 5 days. It started working after 2 1/2 days. My face swelling disappeared after 3 1/2 days. After 5 days, the pain was gone, and I was off the painkillers. Extremely effective drug and pretty quick-acting. No side effects for me whatsoever."

"I had a tooth abscess for 3 weeks. I was on other antibiotics, and it kept getting worse. I started taking this drug, and within 24 hours, the pain finally started to subside. Yes, there are some stomach issues with this medication, but nothing compared to the pain from the dental abscess. I am so glad to find something to get rid of the pain and infection!"

Flagyl (metronidazole) "I am not one to write reviews, but this has to be done. I am based in the UK and was given this medication for wisdom tooth pain. I was told to take it three times a day for 5 days. After two days, I was unfortunately a victim of being the 1 in 10,000 to receive rare side effects from the medication. I had external dizziness and blurred vision every 30 seconds. I went to the GP (doctor) and they said I was given a high dosage and it should have been 2 tablets per day. After 9 painful days, the antibiotic was cleared from my body and I am dizzy and blur-free. I wrote this review because of the hours of research. I have seen no one state how long it took for the side effects to disappear without hospital treatment. Hopefully, this helps someone. Overall, the tablet got rid of the pain, but the extreme dizziness as a side effect was not worth it."

"I've had a dental abscess on the lower left side for 1 1/2 weeks. Because of coronavirus, all dentists are closed, so a phone consultation was all I could have. I was prescribed a 5-day course of 500 mg amoxicillin, which started to clear it, but as soon as the meds were finished, the infection came back the following Sunday. On Monday (yesterday), I again spoke to the dentist, who prescribed another 5-day course of 500 mg amoxicillin. By the evening, the left side of my face was really swollen. I couldn't sleep, and this morning the swelling is huge and feels solid, like I have a tennis ball between my gum and cheek. I phoned the dentist again and spoke to a different dentist who has now prescribed metronidazole alongside amoxicillin. I've read the reviews, and most of them are describing how I feel now because of the infection, not because of the meds. I know everyone is different, but if you have a severe infection, the only thing you can do until dentists reopen is take the meds and pray the pain and swelling go away."

"After reading some of these comments, I really did not want to take this medication. However, after taking it, my abscess and swollen face has almost cleared, and I am out of pain. I took this alongside amoxicillin, and it has worked absolute wonders with absolutely no side effects whatsoever. Some people may react differently, however. But it was an absolute lifesaver for me, it’s the first time I’ve ever had an abscess, and the pain was horrendous. Kind regards, Maria."

"I have used metronidazole many times now, most recently for a tooth abscess, and I have always been perfectly fine with no side effects whatsoever. After the first 24 hours of taking metronidazole, my pain was already considerably less, it really works, so please don’t be scared to take it if you haven’t before, as not everyone will experience bad side effects. Take this medication after a meal and a full glass of water. I also make sure I stay hydrated and eat well while on it."

Flagyl (metronidazole) "This medication could have saved my life! I had a root canal gone awry. The emergency dentist prescribed Clindamycin and Flagyl stat. Could not take the Flagyl as I had swallowed Listerine (has alcohol in it). The next morning an Endodontist redid the root canal, and he said to take the Clindamycin only. Two days - and a LOT more pain and swelling later - I found myself at night with enormous swelling spreading to my upper mouth with more throbbing pain. With nothing to lose, I took one dose (500mg) of Flagyl. Within 2 hours I felt no pain - it was like someone took water out of a balloon. Thank goodness, I believe I had an odd bacterial infection. I'll take both antibiotics for the duration. No alcohol on Flagyl - bad side effects!"

Flagyl (metronidazole) "At first, I felt a bit nauseous and had a whole body feeling like I had the flu when I started the meds. My dose was 500 mg four times daily. I ate an Activia yogurt daily and took Ranitidine to help with nausea. I would find that slowly sipping a caffeinated soda would also help with the nausea and give more energy. I had a severe infection, and it cleared it up."

Flagyl (metronidazole) "This was the first time I received Metronidazole for a tooth infection, usually they prescribe Keflex (cephalexin) or Amoxicillin. I would say that the Metronidazole worked quicker at easing the pain and it wasn't a capsule so I had an easier time swallowing it. However, I have been suffering serious nausea followed by diarrhea since I began taking it. Then last night, without thinking about the interaction, I had a few drinks and spent the night vomiting and very ill with nausea, dry heaves, etc. DO NOT DRINK ALCOHOL WITH THIS MEDICINE and always read your labels and accompanying info. I usually do, but I've never had any kind of reaction to an antibiotic so I got lazy, I suppose, because it was clearly stated on the bottle."

"I would never take this drug again. Side effects included: * Violent vomiting even when I had nothing left in my stomach to throw up * Nausea * Diarrhea (hasn't stopped since I finished the dose 3 days ago) * Fatigue * Tingly legs and feet / shaky at times / felt unbalanced * Yeast infection on torso * Fungal acne breakout on face * Loss of appetite Tips: * If you are taking it 3 times a day, take it 8 hours apart (so 7 am, 3 pm, and 11 pm) with as much food as you can stomach * Do not drink alcohol 2 days before starting (or while taking) * Drink as many probiotics as you can * Stay close to home / bed / toilet * Ask your doctor for something else."

"I was prescribed 400 mg to be taken 3 times a day for a dental abscess and gum boil, both of which didn't clear up previously despite taking 2 full courses of amoxicillin. After day two, I was awakened by severe pain around my infected tooth and had to take codeine and ibuprofen just to not go crazy (this type of pain is an absolute terror). I noticed a strange sensation coming from the affected area and realized it was the abscess actually draining. It just shows how powerful and effective this drug is. You will read a lot of mixed reviews and stories of horrible side effects, but don't get put off by it. It is safe and effective when taken as prescribed, and it is better to suffer some minor inconveniences rather than indescribable agony."

"Wish I had read up on this medication before taking it. Was prescribed 15 metronidazole tablets for a dental abscess and have taken 5. I have had horrendous side effects, totally unexpected as I have taken many courses of antibiotics over the years. Nausea ++, bad headaches, muscle weakness all over, feeling overwhelmed and low confused mood... after 5 tablets! Feel like I’ve been poisoned or something. Beware is all I can say."

"Like a previous reviewer, I was given metronidazole (3 x 200mg daily) for a tooth abscess after amoxicillin failed to clear the infection. Within 48 hours, as well as easing pain from the abscess, my Chronic Fatigue symptoms almost totally disappeared! After 7 years of believing that there was no hope of treatment, I felt I had been given my life back again! Keen to investigate this further, my husband stumbled on the review by Baroness 140, on 23 Feb 2014. We were stunned by the similarities. I received 14 days' treatment with metronidazole to allow for extraction of the tooth. I wait to see if the reprieve from CFS will continue."

"I've been taking metronidazole (400 mg) for two days now, once every 8 hours. I can assure you it does and will help a lot if you are suffering from a dental abscess. After my 4th dose, I feel no pain whatsoever, and the abscess is starting to feel really soft when before it seemed like it was about to burst at any moment. I'm also taking amoxicillin (500 mg), and I've had no side effects with these antibiotics, but I do recommend taking the metronidazole tablets after eating."

"I've been on this medication alongside amoxicillin, and the taste in my mouth just won't go away! The pain has gone, and the ulcers surrounding my abscess have also gone! Just the disgusting taste—metallic and gross, to be honest! I'm feeling sick ALL the time! Does anyone else suffer with this?"

"After visiting the dentist, discovered that I had an infection on the top right molar. This pain is indescribable. Had days of no sleep and took too many painkillers. Yes, these didn't do anything, paracetamol and Nurofen are useless for that type of pain! Got prescribed 9 metronidazole tablets to be taken 3 a day with a gap of 8 hours in between each. It is to be aware that it doesn't work straight away, so don't expect that. It had been 18 hours for my pain to ease, but still got a migraine. I feel sorry for anyone with this pain as it has reduced me to nearly tears and a whole new level of upset that I hadn't experienced before. Great rating for a drug that works miracles, pity you have to go to a dentist to be prescribed it."

"Considering a dental abscess is probably the most pain I’ve ever been in, the metronidazole side effect of a slightly upset stomach I had was definitely a walk in the park. Took 500 mg 2x a day for 7 days, cleared up the infection immediately, and I felt better by dose 3. Usually, I ate something soft (banana, applesauce, eggs, or seasoned rice) before I would take it and had no nausea or throwing up. My stomach occasionally did “whale mating” sounds, but that’s not abnormal for me, lol."

"Amoxicillin for dental abscess only seemed to make it angry. My face was swollen, particularly below my eye. The pain was terrible, and I took too many painkillers. Back at the dentist after five days, they added metronidazole to the prescription, so I took both. Told no alcohol and to always eat prior to taking tablets, which I took together three times a day at eight-hour intervals after food. 500 mg amoxicillin and 400 mg metronidazole. Just after twenty-four hours, the pain had dropped considerably, and I was able to take fewer painkillers, in fact, less than half. Prior to that, I was setting an alarm just prior to their running out after six hours. I even woke up in the middle of the night to take them. Metronidazole was wonderful - but follow instructions."

"Insomnia was the only really troubling side effect for me. A slight metallic taste in my mouth around day 3, but was gone in 24 hrs. Mild diarrhea, my stomach was a bit more acidic than usual, but nothing I couldn't deal with. Always took with a full meal, had NO ALCOHOL (even mouthwash with alcohol is too much on this med, re: pharmacist) and took with Gatorade (helps with bad taste). Be gentle with your body on this med. I found that not having caffeine, any NSAIDs (ibuprofen, aspirin, naproxen, etc.) or anything harsh on the stomach works best. DO NOT DRINK ALCOHOL while on this med - EVEN 1 DRINK. I had already tried 1 course of penicillin and 1 course of amoxicillin before this med, neither worked - 6 days on this, jaw pain and swelling is gone!"
