For Alcohol Use Disorder "I have been a functioning Alcoholic for close to 20 years, I have been to hell and back more than once. I have tried so many different ways to stop but the prospect of losing my wife and 3 kids again and forever meant I had to do something. After presenting at hospital I was then in an open ward for my depression as alcoholism tend to go hand in hand with depression. One of the tablets given was Antabuse this not only gives me a mental hand with drinking due to the reaction but it gives my wife a safety net I will not stop taking it. I have been sober just over 7 weeks soon I will beat the 8 weeks I have only ever been sober for in the last 18 years."

For Alcohol Use Disorder "I've been on this stuff for about 3 weeks. Typically 250mgs 3 times a week. I took my last dose 7 days ago. Not because I wanted to drink but because the drug spaces me out a bit and I was putting it off. So yesterday I decides to test it and drink. Apparently every alcoholic eventually does. Anyway even with a small dose and a 6 day gap, the liquor didn't make me sick but it was a very uncomfortable experience. Instead of that usual obsession where one drink leads to another to the point of total blackout, I actually poured my last beer down the sink. With 4 years of doing everything under the sun trying to put down the bottle, for me a desperate situationeed called for a desperate measures."

For Alcohol Use Disorder "This is a wonderful drug and has helped me control the binges associated with alcohol. I was a moderate-to-heavy drinker before this medication. Now I have been completely sober for two weeks without any side effects. I wanted to stop drinking but had problems in the evenings. Since I have removed the "option" to drink by taking this medication in the mornings when my willpower is strong, it has helped tremendously. "

For Alcohol Use Disorder "Long story short...At the end I was drinking over a liter of vodka per day for over 2 and 1/2 years. I went to a traditional rehab/detox facility in which I went in to one of the worst cases of DT's the doctors/nurses/counselors they had ever seen. I was in a coma for three days. The program was 7 days...I was drinking again by day 9. I realized my life, marriage, and family were falling apart. I found a psychiatrist who utilizes Antabuse/Valium therapy. I told him about my strong concerns based upon the seizures and coma coming off of alcohol my previous attempt and was literally scared to die in my sleep. He reassured me over and over that it would work...he was right and I have not had a drink for almost a month. "

For Alcohol Use Disorder "I have found this drug extremely helpful. Not only does it give my family reassurace of my dedication to sobriety, it seems to have completely ended any cravings. I haven't really given a second thought to the effects drinking with this medicine would have, because since I started taking it I haven't felt the urge for a drink. I think this drug has helped me in more ways than I had ever imagined it could, and I am very glad I started taking it."

For Alcohol Use Disorder "I have attempted sobriety several times, all resulting in returning to alcohol. I attempted Antabuse once and panicked. I have learned from my experiences. I have been sober for over 3 months now, started Antabuse two weeks ago. Now it is my system I could not rate it high enough but would stress being in the correct state of mind is essential. I have not succeeded in the past but am extremely confident that I can and will this time. SIDE EFFECTS OF ANTABUSE Tiredness Headaches Spots SIDE EFFECTS OF ALCOHOL Blackouts Vomiting Hangovers Memory Loss Cost Time in Hospital Loss of Bladder/Bowel Control Physical Damage to self (accidents, broken bones) Seizures Embarrassment After effects due to behavior whilst drunk. For Alcohol Use Disorder "I took Antabuse for 4 months and it was wonderful. Since it does remove the option to drink, it was a huge help. However, I did occasionally crave alcohol so what did I do? I stopped taking it for 2 weeks so that I could drink. It was a huge mistake and I urge anyone taking it to just, as my therapist says, "get that pill in you everyday". Relapsing in not fun and there is the double-whammy of having to stay sober for a while before one can take it again. Anyone who struggles with alcoholism knows that is no easy task."

For Alcohol Use Disorder "Most of you on this site have had one or more miserable mornings where you have told yourself and others that you have quit drinking for good. I had a countless number of those before I saw my Doctor and was prescribed Antabuse. My intentions were always sincere but this medicine required that I saw my intentions through. I had loads of motivation, 2 pills a day, and was sober for a month. Thanks to that same motivation, the fact that I was feeling much better, and many many other reasons, I have been sober for another 3 months without Antabuse. Advice; go to the store and buy all of your alcohol free hygiene products beforehand. You will still have the physical symptoms so read up on those. If you can't talk to your doctor, find another one."

For Alcohol Use Disorder "I've struggled for years with daily drinking at least one bottle of wine per night but more often than not, it would progress to nearly two. I beat myself up every day with guilt and still could not get past the 5pm trigger. Say nothing about the money I was spending. $15 bottles most of the time. Went to Counsellor who referred me to a GP who prescribed Antabuse. I am now Alcohol Free for 18 days. There is no going back. I remember feeling the same resolve when I finally gave up cigarettes many years ago. DRUG FREE at last. I'm going to treat my body with the utmost respect from now on."

For Alcohol Use Disorder "So, I've been battling alcoholism for years - about a decade (and I'm 30). I've been to 2 treatment centers and an outpatient program with the longest stint of sobriety being a solid 109 days. I've gone from being 100% alcohol dependent in my mid 20's to sober to recreational drinking, but almost always I'll end up on benders or sneaking it. Anyway, I tried Antabuse about 6 months ago and took it for about a month...drank on it repeatedly and got so sick each and every time so I just stopped taking the pills. I'm talking beet red face and neck and chest, heart racing, etc. I'm back on it now. I started yesterday and vowed to take it for 6 months."

For Alcohol Use Disorder "I've been occasional drinker for 10 years and that turned into another 10 years of everyday drinking. 1.5 L of wine or 350 oz of hard liquor together with 3 bottles of 0.5L of beer. Didn't have a willpower to quit on my own ( tried too many times). 500 mg of disulfiram (Antabuse) once a day along with 2 mg of Ativan solved my issue. I got my life back. I will recommend this combination to everyone who wants to get their life, dreams, family back. I would recommend not to chose a time, day or date (e.g. January 01, first day of each month or next day after birthday). Get those pills, wake up in the morning or on your way from work and just take that ONE pill!!!!"

For Alcohol Use Disorder "Used if for four weeks two years ago but was then scaremongered about its side effects by a hospital counsellor. Still couldn't control my drinking and has been getting to a seriously dangerous state so I started back on them last Saturday. Today is Day 6 and I have been to the pub for lunch and coffee and have not felt the need to drink although have felt cravings. Have had trouble sleeping and a few headaches but nothing too untoward. Hope to stay sober for a lot longer!"

For Alcohol Use Disorder "Been a 'problem drinker' for a long time. Alcohol is EVERYWHERE, its just too hard to have the willpower never to pick it up again, and one drink leads to many more. Antabuse should be advertised more. I wish more people new about it. I borrowed some from a friend who was done with it (yes, I know I should have seen a doctor). It works fabulously. Of course I experimented to see the affect. A half glass of beer and my face and eyes would turn red, my heart beat would increase, my breathing would change, and some degree of fatigue and dizziness might ensue. It keeps me in check in the way I want, and I've got my excuses not to drink line up when the situations arise. I find my self eating healthier and no hangovers!"

For Alcohol Use Disorder "I finally feel relived that I have control over my craving to drink everyday. I am really happy that I can go into a bar and hang out with my friends and not drink. I am from WI and have basically been drinking since 15. I spent 27 years in the Navy and drank like a sailor. I was a Navy pilot and it was definitely part of the culture. I have been a binge drinker since the beginning. Now I am a businessman and always under constant pressure. Business dinners all the time and a large expense account do not help. I found myself self medicating with alcohol everyday. Just started Antabuse two weeks ago and now I feel in control. Naltrexone was a joke. I could power through that. It was really hard to get prescribed. No side effects"

For Alcohol Use Disorder "Antabuse works!!!! It really helped me stay sober for 3 months- I didn't even think about drinking because I just knew it wasn't an option. Well...a few days ago I drank 3 light beers. I was violently sick!!! I threw up 3 times couldn't even hold water in my system. I'm glad it happened because I will never drink again as long as I'm taking Antabuse."

For Alcohol Use Disorder "I'ts been a hit and miss venture with Antabuse, mostly hit. Sometimes I would take it for 2 months, miss a day, and then fall off the wagon that very night because I "forgot" to take it that morning. I literally cannot skip even ONE pill or else I will drink. BUT, if I take the pill every day... no drinking cravings. I can walk right by the LCBO and not be tempted. You must be vigilant when taking this med and not skip days. Put the pill where you'll see it every morning. I had mine stuffed in my desk drawer partly because I didn't want the wife knowing I was an alcoholic. The other thing that has aided me is my faith in my savior, Jesus Christ. He has given me so many chances to get my act together, and every time I fall I come crawling back to Him on my knees, crying... and He forgives me every time! Hopefully one day I will be able to stop taking Antabuse but I think it will be at least 2 years before sobriety is 'cemented'."

For Alcohol Use Disorder "So I wouldn’t consider myself necessarily an alcoholic, I just want to keep my drinking under control. We like to drink on the weekends, but with 4 kids and a bunch of stress I noticed I started to drink a little more than I was comfortable with. So one of my BFF is a doc and I asked her to give me this med (ANTABUSE) just incase I felt like I needed it. She prescribed it and I took it 2 days in a row, but a work party came up to night and I decided to chance it because I was close to home and it was towards the end of the night. I had a few high alcohol beers and felt absolutely no side effects from this pill. Could it be that it wasn’t in my system long enough? Because EVERYTHING I read I online said it would have made me sick immediately. Any thoughts? "

For Alcohol Use Disorder "Alcohol had completely ruined my life! I lost my marriage because of it! I tried naltrexone, and vivitrol, and found that I could drink around both! I finally couldn't take it anymore and asked my doctor to put me on Antabuse! I am going on 9 months sober, and I couldn't be happier! I haven't had 1 craving, and honestly miss nothing about drinking! Going on this medication and attending regular AA meetings saved my life! For all those that are still suffering from this awful disease, please have the conversation with your doctor!! Life will be amazing!!"

For Alcohol Use Disorder "Absolutely changed my life and made sobriety possible. Should be prescribed more often. I've read that in other countries it's more widely available and used. I thank the heavens for it and I thank my doctor for explaining to me about it and providing me with it. Call it training wheels for good decision making..."

For Alcohol Use Disorder "I tried acamprosate and naltraxone. Both were jokes. Finally I tried Antabuse. I heard many stories online that some could even drink on antabuse. I was in fear. It was my last chance. I wanted the drug to make me sick, terrible sick. Because I knew I would eventually experiment. Few days passed sober one day I had a urge to drink I wanted to experiment so I took a beer, afraid and scared I finished my first beer. Once the beer was in my fear vanished I ordered another and went home. Slowly I got what about to happen. A feeling of heart attack. I wasn't able to breath. But inside I was happy - my biggest fear that antabuse wouldn't work wasn't true. It was working promise. First time in my life I booked a cycle rickshaw for 10 min walking distance asked the driver to drop me at whatever price. I puked ,unlimitedly had terrible headache. I was so happy that next weeks I took my antabuse everyday. Side effects: I sleep 24*7 on weekends and wish I had more time to sleep. Too much fatigue and drowsiness."

For Alcohol Use Disorder "I’ve been on an off Antabuse for the past 5 years. I’ve been a black out drinker for most of my 20’s and in 30’s managed it a little better (no blackouts at least) with the help of the drug. I am shocked by the messages from people whom it hasn’t affected when having a drink ! I guess everyone’s different but I wouldn’t trust everyone out there who say they have been taking it. We drinkers can be great at deceiving. I like Antabuse because it stops the obsession and longest I’ve been sober was about 18 months. Now I’m playing with fire a bit - I might binge on the weekend, regret it , take an Antabuse Tuesday , then stop taking it and try drinking on Friday. Every time I get an incredible red rash all over my body , including my face. I get heart palpitations and strong flu like symptoms. Blocked nose and banging headache. Just after one pill. So , I recommend don’t play around with it !"

For Alcohol Use Disorder "I am so frustrated. I have been on antabuse now for three months - my wife gives it to me and I really resent her. I am 50 years old, I am happy to control my drinking, but sometimes after a long day or when I am away on business, I really just want to chill with a nice cold beer. I started antabuse because once every 10 days I would get drunk, and knowing that my wife would be pissed off, I would get nasty and defensive about it. I wouldn't drive or cause any other trouble. I would drink 10 beers during the course of an afternoon, Uber home and go to sleep. I've tried AA for years now, and was on Antabuse before - never managed to abstain for more than 2 months. My view is this - I am going to drink alcohol again. The more I am forced not to, the more dangerous it becomes for me because at some stage I am going to rebel and over do it and probably kill myself. I am a successful professional, father of 3,"

For Alcohol Use Disorder "If anything the antabuse works TOO well for me! It makes me super sensitive to any alcohol....whether it's in the hand sanitizers, nail polish removers, colognes (even on other people around me) and even some sugar free food products.... (sugar alcohols). Gives me headaches and severe thirst as well."

For Alcohol Use Disorder "Antabuse is fantastic in many ways, but taking away the mental obsession has to be my overall favourite 1. It's unfortunate that it's so highly priced and it's availability is so scarce in Australia considering how high our rate of chronic alcoholism is. I am unfortunately one of the few people who do get the skin rashes and acne , but hey I'm still more attractive with a bad rash than I ever was blind drunk and blacked out somewhere. Thank God truly for Antabuse, no other alcohol medication worked for me or took away the mental obsession. I have a 2 year old child who's life is amazing and normal thanks to her mother's sobriety."

For Alcohol Use Disorder "My husband takes this drug and at first it was a Godsend...now he has learned how to use it also to his advantage. He now takes it on rare occasions and it does not seem to make much difference if he drinks or not. This drug really only works if it is taken everyday at almost the same time...a day without and my husband can drink all he wants, with no side affects at all."
