I had genesight testing done and it said viibryd vilazadone was good for me. I’ve been on clonazepam for 4.5 yrs I take .25mgs twice a day. I also take propranolol which I’m tapering off if, I take it before bed. I tried the vilazadone a few weeks ago and only took 2.5mgs as I’m very afraid of meds. I took it at lunch time and only for 3 days as I started to wake up during the night had some stomach issues and headaches but that stopped, then anxiety started and I panicked and stopped it. My psychiatrist said he didn’t think the low dose woukd cause all this. He said I could try it again once I worked with my psychologist about med fears. My question is dies it cause anxiety when first starting and us it better to take in the evening?

Hello Patty:
Increased anxiety is not listed as a side effect of Vilazodone. Your Doctor is correct that 2.5 mg is a very low dose of Vilazodone. Moreover, I'm surprised that you were able to get a 2.5 mg dose without cutting a pill. Please note that the manufacturer does not support cutting or chewing the pill. The lowest dose available in a whole pill is 10mg - which is just a starting dose to get one use to the medication and to serve as a trial run for potential side effects. 20 - 40 mg is considered to be the therapeutic dosing range.
Everyone is different when it comes to medications. For me, Viibryd (Vilazodone) has ben a life saver. It is the only anti-depressants that has worked for me. Vilazodone never received official approval for use as an Anxiolytic, however it is prescribed by many Physicians off label for anxiety. I can attest to the medication's anti-anxiety properties. I've always found it best to take the medication mid morning with food. The food part is recommended by the manufacturer. Without food you are effectively getting just a half dose.
Take care for now and all the best.
