Side effects - suffered with anxiety/depression so stopped taking Simvastatin 4.5 months ago, still a bit anxious but much better. When on Simvastatin could not bear travelling in cars/planes/trains, which was totally out of character.
Simvastatin Destroyed my Work life & nearly my relationship with my long term boyfriend.
Started taking 40mg of Simvastatin daily Feb 2012 following stroke at age of 32. Stopped taking it 1yr, 9 mths later.
Size 10/12 (UK) before stroke, now size 16 (UK).
How long does it take for Simvastatin to get out of your system once you stop taking it?

I'm 65 years old and been on simvastatin for over 30 years. I never had any side effects until a few years ago. I might note I was diagnosed as bi-polar at 40 and have been on many medications since. The only constant has been the simvastatin. A few years ago I started with some tremors in my hands and feet which progressed to a point that I couldn't even write. Two weeks ago I saw a neurologist and his first action was to take me off the simvastatin. Now 14 days later most of the tremors are almost gone and my cognitive skills have improved in a way I would never believed possible. I'm supposed to take a new drug tricor but I'm a bit shy about it.
I started Simvastatin 3 days ago and I looked up the side effects and one of them was insomnia and they mess with diabetes. I an a type 1 diabetic an it has my sugars so outrageous and I can't sleep and I've been sick since I started taking them.
And I forget everything and my depression has hit a lot harder since taking this medicine.
I started simvastatin 2 months ago and within 24 hours started getting sick when I ate and woke up everyday with a headache. I now may have type 2 diabetes. My doctor ordered blood work. I quit taking the simvastatin two days ago and my blood sugar levels are coming down. They were 244, 2 hours after eating. Now they are around 134. After all night fasting they were 117 the second day after stopping the medication. What's going on?
There are other meds for cholesterol then statins too, if you find you're intolerant to them.
Hi Kaismama,
Thank you for your quick reply. It is very useful to know there are alternatives to statins :)
14 days for meds to clear as I was told . There are 5 other statins to choice from you need be be on one if you already had a stroke . As for weight gain and anxiety I could say.
Hi Dan,
Thank you for your quick response, it is greatly appreciated :)
Hi, Jo-anne! I'm very sorry you had such a terrible time. Simvastin is a short-acting medication with a half-life of about 12hrs. That means if you took 40mg at 12:00pm, at 12:00am there would be 20mgs in your body, at 12:00 noon only 10mgs, etc.
Is there any possibility that you had/have a concurrent condition that might account for the anxiety and depression? I'm not sure about anxiety, but depression has only extremely been reported with simvastatin.
Best wishes, WCV
Hi WCV,
Thank you for your quick response, it was most useful.
I am doing really well now and getting my life back on track.
I was diagnosed as Bi-polar in 2008/2009 and started taking a mood stabiliser around this time. This suited me well and I got a fantastic new job and boyfriend. Life was great until I got the stroke in Feb 2012 where I was subsequently put on Simvastatin and a blood thinner. As I have previously mentioned this severely messed up my life and work. With a cocktail of drugs in my system I did not know whether I was coming or going half the time, so much so that I stopped taking it all Nov 2013. Now I simply take Aspirin to thin the blood and have regular cholesterol blood tests/blood pressure checks. It has been 4.5 months since I stopped taking everything and I feel great. The only thing I am finding is I am over anxious in job interviews which I have never, (pre-stroke), experienced before, hence my original question.
Thanks again for your advice :)
