Norfloxacin Ophthalmic Side Effects

Important warnings This medicine can cause some serious health issues

Oral route (tablet)

Fluoroquinolones, including norfloxacin, are associated with an increased risk of tendinitis and tendon rupture in all ages.

Risk further increases with age over 60 years, concomitant steroid therapy, and kidney, heart, or lung transplants.

Other side effects

Some side effects of norfloxacin ophthalmic may occur that usually do not need medical attention. These side effects may go away during treatment as your body adjusts to the medicine. Also, your health care professional may be able to tell you about ways to prevent or reduce some of these side effects.

Check with your health care professional if any of the following side effects continue or are bothersome or if you have any questions about them:

More common

  • burning or other eye discomfort

Less common

  • bitter taste following use in the eye
  • increased sensitivity of eye to light
  • redness of the lining of the eyelids
  • swelling of the membrane covering the white part of the eye

Serious side effects

Along with its needed effects, norfloxacin ophthalmic may cause some unwanted effects. Although not all of these side effects may occur, if they do occur they may need medical attention.

Check with your doctor immediately if any of the following side effects occur while taking norfloxacin ophthalmic:

Rare

  • skin rash or other sign of allergic reaction

Ocular

Ocular side effects have most frequently included local burning or discomfort. In addition, conjunctival hyperemia, photophobia, corneal deposits, and chemosis have occurred.[Ref]

Gastrointestinal

Gastrointestinal side effects have included reports of bitter taste in the mouth following instillation of norfloxacin ophthalmic.[Ref]
