For the Consumer

Applies to dextromethorphan: compounding powder, oral capsule, oral disintegrating strip, oral drops, oral liquid, oral lozenge, oral suspension extended release, oral syrup, oral tablet chewable

Get emergency medical help if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction while taking dextromethorphan (the active ingredient contained in Delsym) hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.

Stop using dextromethorphan and call your doctor at once if you have any of these serious side effects:

• severe dizziness, anxiety, restless feeling, or nervousness;

• confusion, hallucinations; or

• slow, shallow breathing.

Less serious side effects are more likely, such as stomach upset.

Nervous system

Nervous system side effects have included drowsiness and dizziness. Other side effects such as excitation, mental confusion, and opioid like respiratory depression have been rare and occurred at higher dosages. In some cases of abuse, patients experienced euphoria, hyperactivity, mania, and auditory and visual hallucinations.

Gastrointestinal

Gastrointestinal side effects have included stomach upset.

Hypersensitivity

Hypersensitivity side effects have included rare reports of fixed-drug eruptions.
