Tolterodine Pregnancy Warnings
Tolterodine has been assigned to pregnancy category C by the FDA. Reproductive studies in mice demonstrated no fetal anomalies or malformations at dosages approximately 14 times the human exposure. Embryolethality, reduced fetal weight, and increased incidence of fetal abnormalities were noted at dosages yielding drug concentrations that were 20- to 25-fold higher than in humans. There are no controlled data in human pregnancy. Tolterodine is only recommended for use during pregnancy when benefit outweighs risks.
Tolterodine Breastfeeding Warnings
There are no data on the excretion of tolterodine into human milk. Tolterodine is excreted into the milk of mice. The manufacturer recommends that due to the potential for serious adverse reactions in nursing infants, a decision should be made to discontinue nursing or discontinue the drug, taking into account the importance of the drug to the mother.
