Default Lexapro and Tinnitus

Just curious to see if anyone else has had similar experiences. About one month ago i asked my GP for some Xanax to help me sleep and to deal with occasional panic attacks. The GP refused claiming that Xanax was too addictive. Lexapro was prescribed. I've taken SSRI's in the past (paxil, effexor) but never stayed on them very long because of the sexual side effects. I'm familiar with the "dosing period" required by SSRI's.

So i tried to stick it out with Lexapro but my reactions were worse than i've ever experienced (Major jaw clenching, sweats, axienty, etc.) After my fourth dose, i experienced a hot flash so bad it felt like i was going to die. So i took some of my sister's Xanax and fell asleep for about 6 hours. When i woke up i had ringing in my left ear.

Well, it's been over a month now and the ringing has not disapeared. Sometimes is so low i can barely notice it, but other times it wakes me up in the middle of the night. I went to see an ENT who verified there was no fluid in the ear. But i do have a slight hearing loss. I'm scheduled to go back in a week for more teststing (testing for nerve damage)

Has anyone heard of problems like this with Lexapro. Will this ringing ever go away?

edit: btw, i stopped taking lexapro after the 4th dose.

Betsy,

Did he have Tinnitus before he took paxil? I know sometimes SSRI's are used to help relieve the depression caused by tinnitus. I've also hear that SSRI's can cause tinnitus (usually a withdrawl symptom). I'm just curious as to how long (if ever) it will take this horrible condition to go away.

What does your boyfriend do to cope with tinnitus?

I'm not sure if he had it before... but he was depressed for other reasons. And, to cope, he does absolutely nothing. I don't think there's anything you CAN do for what hurts you inside your head, is there?

I dont know if this will help but I took Lexapro for a year and it was great for me it totally worked for my anxiety and depresion. BUT when my insurance was lost I had to quit the Lexapro. I too had ringing of the ears, terible panic attacks, and suicide feelings. It took about 3 months before it all went away.

My research found Melitonin and Lipoflavonoid offered as treatment for tinnitus. I have yet to address this with my doctor.

Just curious: Did your tinnitus ever went away after stopping Lexapro?

Default swooshing in the ear

I just got off Lexapro after 4 years of being on it, after having racing heart beat, and minor pains in my heart, scared me enough to taper off over two weeks time. After being medicine free for about 6 complete days, the constant swooshing sound in my left ear does not go away. After 40 days of medicine free, I was so down in the dumps I had to try something else, so my doc. prescribed Wellbutrin XL (I'm so scared of medicines) that i'm cutting my 150mg of wellbutrin into 4's for now, and am only taking a quarter. It's been day 7 now and I do feel a tiny pick-me-up inside (I'm a smaller woman) it doesn't take too much medicine to help me. Anyway - the swooshing in my ear still persists, did 6 days of Rinitan (for the ear) (the generic form) didn't help, today I got 7 days of Prednisone 40mg to maybe help any swelling in the ear area....we shall see. Bottom line is antidepressants are a God sent to those suffering from depression, I've been so helped, but I HATE these side-effects. I wish the best for your ear.
