For Crohn's Disease, Maintenance "Have been on azathioprine for 7 years for Crohn's maintenance and have not had a single relapse in this time. Had previously had allergic reaction but for some reason I now seem to be able to take it. Currently suffering from dizziness but doubt this is to do with the azathioprine as I have had it so long. Found that it works very quickly for me when I start taking it and is a lot better than being on steroids."

For Pemphigus "I am a 38 year old female who was diagnosed with mouth, throat and esophageal pemphigus vulgaris in November 2018. I was given prednisone almost immediately, and two shots of rituximab in January 2019. In January 2019 I was started on azathioprine on a dose of 150mg. I was doing very well till November 2019 ... as from November I’ve been getting these weird chills especially in my back. Went to the ER twice- blood tests were run and on both occasions I was told the only problems is a high count of WBC in my urine - I don’t believe that is the cause of my chills. All I know is that they are driving me nuts. Can anyone relate?"

Imuran (azathioprine) for Rheumatoid Arthritis "I've been taking Imuran for 2 weeks now to treat my inflammatory arthritis since no other drug seemed to help. I haven't noticed any improvement yet, but the nausea is unbearable. I'm not able to eat anything and I'm constantly hungry. Reminds me of my pregnancy morning sickness, though it's not as bad as methotrexate was. I've already lost a bit of weight due to this. Yesterday, started taking anti-nausea medication to be able to cope. I hope the side effects end soon and the drug helps treat my symptoms."

For Crohn's Disease, Maintenance "I've had Crohn's Disease for 43 years and have been on everything. Each new GI doc I get seems to love Azathioprine. It has never, ever, ever done anything for me. On the plus side, it hasn't given me any side effects either. Note: historically, they have prescribed a low dose, 50mg I believe. Then I finally got a doc who knew that the dose needs to be a "therapeutic" dose which is higher (in my case 3.5 times higher) - they'll know the correct dosage by bloodwork."

For Behcet's Disease "After trying the first couple of medications that are indicated as treatment for this condition without results, my physician decided to try azathioprine. Again, increasing the dosage until I was experiencing relief, we topped out. At the maximum recommended dosage, I still only get some of the intended relief. I wish it worked better for me but I don't have any side effects. Until we can figure out something that is more effective, I'm pleased with the results of azathioprine."

For Lupus "I've been taking Azathioprine for over two months now (May 2021) for my lupus. First on low dose then it was raised after a few weeks of taking it. There has been no improvement for me but there has been problems that was caused by Azathioprine. There has been blood in my urine, stomach irritation, occasional nausea, fatigue (even though I'm often fatigue because of lupus & other medications) as well as hair loss. When I was first diagnosed with lupus in April 2020, my symptoms were getting worse & hair loss happen majorly. By mid-October 2020 I was hospitalized for over a month. I started to improve but still not my full self. Still aches & pain but my hair was starting to grow back. However, taking Azathioprine has caused me to lose my hair again but in noticeable areas. Azathioprine isn't working for me & causing me problems."

"I was diagnosed with Sjogren's Syndrome about a year ago. My initial prescription was for hydroxychloroquine. After 6 months, I didn't see any benefit, and also developed a severe itching all over my body. My doctor switched me to azathioprine and I'm surprised to see no other posts for this drug azathioprine for Sjogrens. My main problem is that I ache all over all the time. I started at 50mg for 2 weeks and then moved to 100mg for a few weeks now. So far, I still ache all over, and have seen no improvement in any symptoms. Based on this, I'm not sure it's helping me at all."

For Inflammatory Bowel Disease "I have Crohn's, but it is in my small intestine (not terminal ileum this time) and worse in my mouth. Most of the drugs used (except steroids which can only be used for a short period of time) are mainly for the terminal ileum and colon and therefore do nothing for my problem. Worse Entyvio didn't help and made the mouth ulcers significantly worse to the point being unable to brush my teeth, eat almost anything and was eating away at my gums & cheeks. Azathioprine has been the solution, that has kept the mouth ulcers at bay."

For Crohn's Disease, Maintenance "This medicine azathioprine made me have terrible migraines from just one dose. Took 5 pills for 250mgs and had a migraine for 3 days straight. I wanted to cry. I really wanted this medication to work along with my humira since the doctor said they go together. I wanted it to work so much that I tried it again...this time 4 pills and had the same reaction. I will never try this medicine again. They put this medicine as an allergy on my chart. It's sad because my Crohn's isn't under control and I wished my body would tolerate this machine but for some reason it can't."

"I was diagnosed with Anti-Jo 1 positive Polymyositis. After a complete work up at the Mayo Clinic it was discovered I actually have the classic triad of the syndrome - a very subset of Antisynthetase Syndrome including ILD, RA, and Myositis. I’m also on hydroxychloroquine & prednisone. But after trying both methotrexate & leflunomide over the course of a year I began at the starting dose of 50mg of azathioprine. I’m now on 150mg daily and it has been a lifesaver for me, literally. The only real side effect is diarrhea about an hour after taking it in the morning but it’s completely tolerable considering the myriad of other issues I experienced before this miracle drug. My labs are holding steady and I’m maintaining. I’m hoping to be able to taper off prednisone completely now that I’ve finally found a long term medicine that helps because I’ve put on 40lbs since this whole journey began as a result of the steroids."

"I have Discoid Lupus. I've been on Azathioprine 50mg twice a day for 10+ years. I have had zero side effects from this drug! At one point, my doctor decided to cut the dosage in half and Lupus immediately started flaring again. They switched me back to the 50mg daily and I was quickly in remission again. So thankful for this drug!"

For Crohn's Disease, Maintenance "Took my first dose and 3 hours later I vomited 6 times in a hour and had pure water coming into my ostomy bag with 14 empties all in a hour where I was unconscious from severe dehydration and rushed to ER. They had to pump 3 bags of Luis in fast and now still recovering days after. I was ok before and now issues which sucks just from one dose."

For Granulomatosis with Polyangiitis "I have Wegener's granulomatosis (aka granulomatosis with polyangiitis) .Was on Imuram for two years, have to switch to Neoral now. Apparently it's not working as it should be. Dreading the switch however, because Imuran gave me few to no side effects. Have experienced hair loss after about a year, but could also have a different cause (I take lots of other medication and many non-drug related causes have to be considered as well, eg hormones, stress,...). Also very cheap drug for me, but we have universal health care in Belgium so don't know of this is also the case elsewhere."
