Is it safe for a 6 yr old child to take melatonin?

Dr. said they could, but natrol liquid says not under 10 yrs old.Is it safe - how much 1 mg or more? Worried since bottle of liquid says not for kids under 10 and mine is 6 yrs old. Help!
