I had the Implanon implanted July of 2011, before that I took the pill. I was fine August of 2011 and come September I got a vaginal infection. Every month since then I started to get either yeast infections or Bacterial Vaginosis in addition to developing a rash under and on the sides of my mouth. This is the first time in my life that I've had infections this frequent (of coarse every now and then a yeast) but NEVER every month and I have never had a problem with acne or a rash being around my mouth. My obgyn says that its not the implanon causing my misery but it's the only thing I changed so it has to be. My general doctor says the rash looks like perioral dermatitsis. I was given antibiotics for ten days and it didn't make it go away. I've been suffering a little over two years. As far as Implanon working, it has done its job. I never bleed (maybe spotting every now and then), I haven't gained weight, and I barely know its there. I've read other reviews and see the pros and cons from women but haven't read of my two concerns. If any one has had or heard of someone having my problems, PLEASE let me know. I hate to have to take it out and it not be the problem. Also, any suggestions on a different birth control that doesn't cause these issues? Thank you for your time!
Can Implanon cause vaginal infections (Y.I., or B.V.) every month, & rash around the mouth?

I am so glad I found this thread! I had my third Nexplanon stick inserted in May of this year and immediately stated getting BV symptoms (no vaginal issues at all with the previous two inserts). I've been battling BV since then and am yet again on antibiotics along with Diflucan and my vigina is still on fire, even though I'm 4 days into the treatment. In addition, I have been getting these same strange blisters at the corners of my mouth for the past year which come and go. And no, it's definitely not from oral sex. I'm going to finish this last antibiotics treatment on Tuesday and if it's not gone by then I'll go and have the implant removed, as well. Will keep you posted.
I got implanon in January 2018, it’s now July 2018 and i’ve had the same problem I keep getting BV. I never used to get it before. I see now I’m not the only one and it seems to be a common problem with the implant, I plan on trying it removed soon.
It can increase your risk of developing a yeast infection so tenically yes it can
I had experienced this problem with nexplanon accept the rash
I’ve never had yeast infections before but when I got on it I had my first then after I cured that one another after another kept showing up
I also got really bad acne
It’s made me lose way to much weight I went from 140 pounds to 105 due to lost in appetite and bleed all month so far it’s been nothing but a nightmare for me
I’m currently having the same problem as I type. I can’t have sex if feels Ike my vaginas being ripped even with the slightest penetration. It itches so bad and if i do rub or scratch i start to bleed. I’m always dry unless i have BV or Y.I. My vagina swells up so bad and turns so red and i am black. I made an appointment to get it taken out but kaiser won’t be able to remove it until a month from now
Hi I am currently having the same issues that you are having, did all the symptoms go away after the removal? Vaginal irritation (burning) hair thinning, and Bacterial Vaginosis. I have gotten tested everything came back NEGATIVE so this is my last result!
I previously wrote about my experience with nexplanon and recurrent bacterial vaginosis. This original post is so old but I said I would update after I had it removed.
After having nexplanon removed and receiving my first period, my symptoms have completely went away. No more itching or antibiotics. My sex drive has returned and I can actually get wet again when my partner and I have sex. I'm so happy with having it removed and I would recommend to any woman who is having problems with bacterial infections coming back over and over... Take it out. Save yourself the heartache and do it. For now, we are using condoms and maybe later I will try the pill. Don't wait three years because it's convenient.
Hey! I am getting my nexplanon out this week or next. I have been to the doctor 4 times since December. I have had both B.V. and yeast infections non-stop. They all keep telling me that I'm just prone to them but that makes no sense. I have never had one before the implant. I am going crazy. I can't have sex with my boyfriend because it seems like every time we do I get B.V. I had him checked and me TWICE! I am taking showers before and after(same with him). I am so glad you replied! I am going to have mine taken out and take the medicine and hopefully this will be the last time I will have to deal with this! If anyone else can give me any updates to theirs that would be amazing! I hate my doctor saying I'm crazy and that nothing could ever do that. It has made my sex life and general day to day activities terrible.
I am SO SO glad i found this post. Now im sure it was the implant. Ive always been a healthy woman and never had any of this problems. Bt this past year has been hell. I even got accused of not taking care of myself because of the smell.. on feb 2014 i got nexplanon. First year n half was perfect. This past year i been having yeast infection and bv. One after another. And like 3periods I go to the dr and get treated bt it comes back. I stoped using soaps down there because thats what i was told that may be causing the unbalance. Bt i still have the problem.. i get alot of discharge too. I have to wear a liner everyday.. i finally got my nexplanon taken out last week and on meds again for yeast and bv. Now i really hope all this is over because i want to feel healthy and good about myself again. I want to feel confident that im clean and dont smell, specially during sex.
I'm interested in your journey in this, I had my nexplanon taken out at the end of December and am on my final round of metrodiazanol, it's the third round in 6 months and I'm done after this. I guess i'll be trying boric acid and acidiphilis after this, if my body doesn't fix whatever keeps going wrong. I'm hoping that taking it out will put a stop to this. I just saw that you and I had both had ours removed recently and I'm hoping that you and I both can get better.
Omg thank god i found this thread. I'm exactly the same. Have had yeast infection every since month and it's getting me down as I'm constantly wet because of it. Due to get my implant out 2nd January so will let you all know how it goes. Also has anyone else had theirs out and noticed a positive change??
I've read this whole forum and I too am having symptoms after having Nexplanon inserted. It's been months now and after several rounds of antibiotics, ph balancing wash, otc yeast infection meds, various natural remedies, increased water intake, diet change..nothing is helping. I've even soaked a tampon in yogurt and inserted it for several hours. Coconut oil, garlic, vinegar... etc. I've only had BV once while pregnant. Maybe 2 times I've had a yeast infection in the past. It's really difficult when your obgyn assures you that it can't be the implant, but it's the only thing that's changed. No new sex partners, same soaps. I wish there were more posts on here from women who have successfully removed the implant and found relief. I get frequent headaches now and my arm aches when touched.
Is it worth it to keep it in for the next few years to avoid periods and pregnancy, but to be plagued with constant itching and aching, to the point where sex isn't even a priority or desire anymore?
I will call my obgyn on Monday, and I know she'll try to persuade me into keeping it. I would like for her to take some time to read about what seems to be only happening to one of her patients, but I know that won't happen.
I will update!
I got mines implanted in Dec 2016 and I have been getting bacterial infections every month as well and I never had this problem either I’m not gaining weight but I keep having random periods that last any where from 3 days to 2 weeks at a time every three weeks it’s ridiculous I’m getting mines taking out soon!
I. Have been havin same problem since the first one three years ago listenin to my dr now I jus got the second one and it is gettin worse bv every month had my first sore on the inside of my mouth Im seriously thinkin of takin it out
You are not alone.. I had nexplanon placed in Nov 2016 and have had bleeding since its placement. I tried 3 months of bc pills to correct the bleeding, w no luck. I also had 4 yeast infections since its placement. I am 36 years old and have only had two yeast infections in my life, before the implant placement. Now, 4 yeast infections within 9 months! Pretty awful! Also, there has been a dramatic increase in sinus infections/sinusitis as well. My PCP referred me to a ENT specialist, bc of my sudden increase in infections/symptoms. I asked the ENT MD if he thought the progesterone could be causing increased sinus infections. He hesitated, sighed and said "No, I don't think so." I also asked my GYN about the sinus issues and she believes there could be a correlation bc the drug thins the muscus membranes. Long story short, I will be getting the nexplanon removed.
Since insertion, I've had 4 yeast infections, constant bleeding, and a significant increase in sinus issues. I have not gotten pregnant though! I'm sure this is a great bc method for many, but for me it has been super frustrating!
I just had the implanon put in April 2017 and in the short time I've had it in I already hate everything about it. First off, I never know when my periods going to come and when it does how long it will last. Like most commenting, my urge to have sex has dwindled. My moods up and down, one minute I hate the world and everything in it, the next I feel like everyone hates me. I've gained just about 30 lbs in the last 3 1/2 months. My acne has been outrageous. And as much as doctors would like to deny it, it does screw with your vag. Pretty sure I have another bacterial infection now, this will be the second one since I got this stupid thing put in and I've never had any kind of infections down there before. I was on the pill before the implanon and had 0 problems. But the doctors sit and convince you that shoving something in your arm will be way better for you. It's consistency to stop pregnancy may be great but it's not worth it.
I had my inserted in October 2014 and the beginning of last year I started having B.V. and it has been a constant ongoing thing all the time. The doctor I was gong to retired so I had to switch to a new doctor and she is not as good as my last doctor, all she want to do is have you to keep coming back to her so she can provide prescriptions, but that's just a temporary fix and I'm still having them. I use condoms so I know I don't have no std, and I've been tested. I would like to get it remove as soon as possible, but these doctors always come up with an answer to not get it remove. Right now I'm taking fluconazole, because she said I have a yeast infection, I really think it's the nexplanon in my arm. If this doesn't clear up I'm going to bring it to her attention that I think the birth control is causing my problem not to clear up. I will let you know what happen and if I'm able to remove it I will go back to the Depo Provera, same benefits just a pain to go back every 3 months.
Just an update on my condition after taking out the nexplanon... this Saturday would make 2 weeks and once they took it out the next day I got my period and Wednesday it finished, (3days) and I have not got any BV or Yeast Infection symptoms at all ! I feel sooooo much better without the implant omg I would never recommend it to anyone !!! I wouldn't wish that on my enemy at all ... they should def do more research on that birth control
Hi! Did removing the nexplanon really help you? I went thru one and was fine but have had the 2nd for about 1.5 years. Last summer, almost 1 year in on the 2nd implant, I started getting BV and have had it 4 times now. I had never had it before and before then had one had 1 yeast infection and I'm in my early 30s. My doc said the same thing, that the implant is the cause but we have tried everything and it keeps reoccuring. I love the implant because I don't have to think about anything but I can't live like this. I'm newly single and I don't want to be self conscious over anything.
Finally I feel like I'm not the only one who going through this issue ! I've got my implant in Jan 2015 and after I kept getting a yeast infection which I kept having to go to the doctor office BUT starting June 2016 is when I kept getting BV over and over again! I swear I was diagnosised with BV every single month since June and it's getting to a point where I'm getting depressed because I'm constantly wondering if I smell myself. My GYN put me on a 4 month gel which is annoying because who wants to be on medication for that long ! now I made an appointment for the 13th of this month to remove the implant because I'm convinced it's the birth control ... my period comes like every other month but when it comes, it stays for so long and the pain is unbearable ... so I will update you on how I am after they remove it
