... hyperthyroidism. An ultrasound revealed I have a fairly large goiter on my thyroid an my symptoms from the hyperthyroid are worsening so, doctor has decided its best just to remove my thyroid. I was wondering if there was anyone out there with something similar to my case. How did you feel once the thyroid was removed? Did you begin to gain a lot of weight? Did you have a plan prior to removal? Did you immediately become hypo?

Hi Lacy,
I had a major depression in 2006 and was prescribed Lithium. That cause me to become hypothyroid in 2007. Unfortunetely in 2011 I was diagnosed with Thyroid Cancer. I had it removed January 2012. I was in the hospital for 3 days because I had trouble with my Calcium levels. You need some pain killer like Advil for when you come out of surgery for a few days. A little hard to eat anything hard. Hard to swallow for a few days too. Then in March I had Rai treatment (Radio Active Iodine) but you will not need that. It is only when you have Cancer. I feel great since I had my thyroid out. I'm not tired anymore. I didn't realise I still felt tired until I had it out. You will feel better. You still need Synthroid to stablelize your sinthetic thyroid for life. But it is well worth it! You will see. I did gain weight, but I just turned 50 so I have been going through menopause.
So I have gained about 10 pounds on that and I ate alot of junk in the summer so another 7 pounds there. I said a prayer for your surgery for you!
Thank you! Blessings!
Hey there, my journey started in about 2007. I had a sore throat and went to my primary care Dr. She thought I had a sinus infection or strep throat. One round of antibiotics and I still had a sore throat and I was tired all the time. I thought the tiredness was due to being a wife, mom, caregiver and business owner. My Dr suggested I have some blood work done. So I did. I had to go back to see her because she wasn't pleased with my results and in THAT appointment she announced, with no further diagnostic testing that I HAD thyroid cancer. I am almost begging you not to take someone's word for such a thing without more testing. I went to and ENT, totally freaked out of my mind. All I could think about was the word "Cancer" and my family. The ENT did a thyroid biopsy in his office. Um... NO! That was not cool and not the way to go! Oh, it came back benign by the way :) Since then, I have changed Drs, as you'd imagine.
I had a thyroid ultrasound every year and every year it was getting a little bigger until 2011 when I choked on every I ate and I couldn't turn my head to the left and still breath. My Dr sent me to a wonderful Dr who specializes in thyroid removal. People come from all over the nation for his care. He is a quiet man but so complete in his care and examination.
I had my thyroid completely removed a year ago, it was very large but we were all surprised by a tennis ball sized nodule that was pushing against my throat and toward the back of my neck + lymph nodes in my neck and 1 parathyroid gland ( we have 4). One year later and no one can see my scar. Oh- I was terrified I'd always have this monstrous scar. OK... enough with the vanity stuff! Let's get to recovery.
Surgery was easy, even though I was of course, nervous. I made the surgical team laugh, that helped me. I remember telling EVERYONE I came contact with that I got VERY sick from anesthesia. I awoke from surgery, surprised at the lack of intense pain!! Didn't y'all just cut my throat? My pain was tolerable but I won't lie, I was happy for the pain meds for the 1st few days because I am a big baby. I did take longer off of work than I expected because I was just SO tired and I was on Synthroid + 1800 mg of calcium! I had an allergic reaction to the calcium because some types are made with oyster shell and I am allergic to shellfish.*****NOTE: no one said not to take calcium 5 hours after taking Synthroid! Gee thanks...
I did see a recommended ENT. That didn't go well @ all. All I got was scolded for not keeping my scar covered for at least 1 year and gee, she had to make the appointment quick because she had to leave for her own Drs appointment. I was a tad less than impressed :( I didn't go back- as you'd imagine.
So, a year later- I am researching why I am STILL so tired, why does my body hurt all the time, why am I not in control of my emotions from time to time, why do I have anxiety and when will I be ME again??? Weight gain- yeah, I have gained a bit but am told that dialing in the medication to me blood levels helps a lot- so does common sense, as in make good choices with what I consume. :) I am feeling a tad rebellious at the moment and don't want to! I will get there...
It hasn't been easy on my marriage @ all. I feel more aggressive and verbal. My patience is slim (at least something is, ha ha!) I feel like I am not the Mom I want to be and some days- I am almost paralyzed with exhaustion and or pain. My Drs haven't given me any insight on whether this is normal. They say I am fine. I don't feel fine! My occupation has changed so there is NO down time. I MUST get back to me.
I guess more blood work is in order.
I just wish Drs gave more information about how we'd feel after surgery. There was nothing told to me except take my thyroid meds ONE hour before anything else and after I had surgery the surgeon told me to not consume ANY calcium 5 hours after taking synthroid. Gee thanks, all these years and no one had ever told me that & I'd have a bagel with cream cheese or coffee with creamer with in an hours of waking up.Oh well, it is what it is but I am kinda fussy about it. Sigh... Some folks take the medication at night. Some folks take it in the morning, I'm a meds in the morning gal.
Just a note.
You can take calcium after 4 hours of Synthroid. And you can eat after 1 hour even milk after Synthroid. I like to take my meds in the morning and have noticed that some people will take their meds when they get up in the night to go to the washroom. I take it a 4 or 5am and don't have to wait when I get up to eat.
Take care everyone!
Thank you! I just truly wish I had been better informed as to what changes I would go through. Again, surgery was a breeze for me- it's life now that is not so great. I have to keep reminding myself I'm not nuts and there are times when my husband is supportive and others when he is not. We are learning this together. I'm the gal who ENJOYED painting her own home (inside and out), working in my garden, yes-even working on cars. I can't do those things now... I am just too tired and sore. I have a demanding job that I used to travel for, now I don't and need to start doing so again. Being a client relations person when all you want to do is sleep is tough. When I'm done working, I crash and crash hard. It's like every once of energy was given away.
I just want to be "me" again and I had NO idea this would impact me, my family and my job SO much! (shaking my head) I'm tired of the pity party too... it's annoying to be honest, I have too much to do. Most of our friends jokingly say I am Wonder Woman or Mighty Mouse... not so much anymore.
Partial throidectomy - normal levels, levothroxine 75mg daily - d3 calcium daily - 10cm non malignant hot nodule.
I am a business owner as well, my marriage is legit on the edge of ending. My husband just isn't there for me. I feel like a more intense version of myself. I have anxiety, I'm tired, irratic behavior. I had been diagnosed with bi polar years ago, I was fine for 9 years, then now... boom. I don't know if I'm crazy or just waking up from a 9 year relationship.
I didn't know I can't take d3 calcium together with levo... I have been. My levels are fine??? Doctor said nothing, except it might be slightly high, so don't take Sunday. I did that and LOST It Tuesday.
I can't lose it at work. I have a business to run and women counting on me.
I gained 8-10 lbs since then. Terrible.
I don't want to be ME again if I was happy with that boring life. I just don't know../
Hi, Just want to say, You will never regret having your thyroid removed, if it is problematic and causes you to feel sick all the time. I had mine removed 12 years ago and I must confess it was the best thing I have ever had done. Remember to have your TF test done at least once every six months to monitor the blood levels. It might take some time untill you are on the right daily dose for your body. Bad thyroids can easily turn into malignancy which might take your life. Thinking of you, don't be scared it is not a painful operation at all. I was treated for 18 months for "believe this one" chronic sinusitus - untill one day I just did not have the strength to drive my car or walk 10 steps. I booked myself into the hospital that very same day and said I will not leave until someone can tell me what was wrong with me as I felt as if if had a terminal illness.
Needless to say after 13 days in the hospital, hundreds of tests and radioactive iodene treatment, it was determined that I had to have my thyroid removed. I was placed on steroids for some time, which made be gain a lot of weight - I felt like a balloon. After the operation I very slowly lost that weight again. My blood levels had to be brought down before they would operate on me as my heart was racing at 148 beats per minute which was at seizure level. If I think back about my situation, I now realise that I put my body though a lot, specifically the emotional side as I just wanted to cry all day and I could not controll it. My poor husband and son was at whits-end with me and almost cost me my marriage because of the mood swings. If it making you sick and you know it, have it removed. Riela
Thank You Riela.
Wow
For a long time I have felt I was crazy, I have been to several doctors because I have all of the symptoms you mentioned. Did you have memory problems also?
I am glad I found this
I found on 6/8/14 I have papillary carcinoma type 6 size both lobs 5.6 cm operation take place by professor Anthony Clifford RPAH Sydney 27/10/14 2:30
Pm I awake 8:20 pm the left lobe was hard to removed muscles was needed to be cut the parathyroids was saved and re grafted on my side neck , I take OROXINE 150 mg daily on week end 200 MG every morning 6 AM I we slow in calcium magnesium and I was on Calcitriol for my parathyroids , the last step iodine 131 radiation for possible metastasis. I lost one on 12/12/14 because under a test CT SCAN they injected me iodine and that disquilify me for the radiation 131 which hane been postponed I feel okay little funny after the op perfect pins and needles often but at least the first stage occurred
I have suffered the same symptoms for about ten years, Drs telling me I have severe sinusitis. One Dr told me my thyroid function was erratic but she would keep doing blood tests and monitoring my thyroid, this went on for the past 7 years. I finally got fed up and changed Drs, was sent to a thyroid specialist who said my thyroid was almost not functioning at all and referred me to an ear nose and throat specialist. Eventually a biopsy of the thyroid was taken and MRI scans suggested I was at risk of a heart attack unless something was done. Wanting a second opinion I was referred to a Sydney Specialist this week who has started me on medication. Question everything and if you want to ask me any questions feel free to do so.
Me again. Just remember that for every story of something going wrong like our friend here, there are thousands of success stories. The surgery is very common and the Results well known. My surgeon had done a few thousand after 40 years. Delaying the surgery can risk your life. It has been a month. Please take care of this soon. Stay in touch, Karen
Had appointment today with Dr. Starting PTU. Then surgery is to be scheduled this month. I have no insurance so, it's been rough. I feel miserable and am thankful for a dr that found me a surgeon that specializes in this an will do the surgery with $ upfront an let me work on payments.
Excellent Lacey, I feel for you on the surgery, luckily it is often day surgery so be sure to have someone to drive you there and home. Plus someone to stay with you at home until you feel comfortable. You are going to be fine. I am behind you all the way. Please stay in touch.
Thank you so much! Have you ever taken the ptu? I have an am a bit nervous to take it! Although, I am desperate enough for anything to work at this point.
Ummm... Not sure what you are abbreviating. But I have had biopsy with needle. Bone scan, radioactive injection for growth of cells. And a thyroid uptake scan. All were simple. Do any of these sound like your procedure? I am not always on top of abbreviations.
PTU is a medication that will lower your T3 and T4 hormones that the overactive thyroid produces. On my prescription it reads Propylthiouracil.
Took first dose just an hour ago and can feel a difference! Feeling calm.
Thanks. Not part of my experience. Hang in there. Things are on the upswing. : )
I was just diagnosed with thyroid Cancer... I just read alot of comments. They really helped alot. I had an ultra sound done of my thryroid in 8/2014. I mentioned to my PCP that I thought I would need a biopsy. One of my nodules is 5cm pretty big, I have four nodules. My PCP did not say anything about it when I asked about it he never answered. I went in again in January and complained the the lumps in my neck were getting bigger, then he sent me to a surgeon. I am so scared right now, because I probably had Cancer 8 months ago. I pray it is Stage 1. I find out tomorrow if it has traveled any where else. I did not think we could loose our hair from it though.
I have three thyroid nodules. Going to do FNA tmr. I am so scared. How much does the total thyroid removal opeartion cost? Thanks.
I just had a partial thyroidectomy on 17 February 2016. I was having a lot of pain in my neck so they decided to conduct a ultrasound, I found that I had five nodules on the right side of my neck. They later conducted a MRI and a biopsy. I was told one of the nodules had gotten a little bigger. They called I wanted me to later drive to the Ralph h. Johnson VA hospital in Charleston, South Carolina to talk about surgery. The surgery went well but I feel like I don't have a lot of energy. Now I'm just waiting for a follow-up.
I am so glad to hear you had a good experience. I am hypothyroid and have been so sick for years. My thyroid levels have been so eratic, up and down, and then finally began feeling like I was choking all the time. They did an ultrasound and found no life whatsoever in any part of the gland. Waiting to hear from Endocrinologist to discuss what to do next. I am so glad that the option of removing it isnt as terrifying as I thought. What is recovery time?? How long before being able to return to work??
Hi, I have had hypo thyroidism since 1997 to present I was about 22 years old when I found out I have it and now I am 43 years old and have been having troubles with my thyroid symptoms being soooo over tired all the times, hair falling out so much , all I want to is to sleep all day long .. i keep fighting myself not to sleep so much because i have 2 children to depends on me daily.. its so tough .. i have seen my endo doctor for years and keep adjusting synthroid medicine so many times it has been lasted for almost a year now that my thyroid isn't working right anymore.. i have been considering about removing my thyroid and being normal again but i know i will have to take medicine rest of my life to balance out my hormones .. but is it safe ?? i just don't want to mess my health up i am deaf and a mom of 2 kids ..
i am scared for my life i have been feeling panic , tiring , hair falling out so much and weight gain bad even i don't eat so much ..my endo doctor said it's unnecessary to remove the thyroid glands and keep trying to find right dose of synthroid.. it has been almost a year that has been adjusting synthroid mg so many times and it didn't success at all.. so frustrating for me.. help me with this .. i do not know how to say to my endo doctor about it he made me feel like hopeless! i live in northeast florida..
thank you ...
HI Lacy, Yes I had my [left thyroid] removed along with a very large nodgle, that when I extended my head back, it poped out.. I wasn't in pain.. before i knew it was my thyroid.i was always tired , had nasal probs, flu like symtoms.. my bofriend then brought me to his Dr. he had ear, throat, probs..well his Dr. knew emmeadiatly sent me to a endo/speacialist.. you know it was so long ago. over 18 yrs ago.. i do remember the Dr, saying well ok if it's not bothering you well wait ? I thought for What ? the nodgel was getting larger, they did take a byopsy,it was not cancer.. i was still sleeping all the time..sweating.. I called and said "I want it out NOW" and so they did... and OMG... I almost died on the table,, the oeration went bad,,I had to have a transfussion.. he said the nodgle was so large it had no place to go..
After it was all done,,he said I would have to take synthroid all my life.. I healed but Lacy I was NEVER the same..now I have R.A, Lupus, and more..OH and the ONLY way I knew I had lupus my dermitoligest looked so closely at my tyriod test,,SHE found the lupus,,, all my other Drs said my thyroid looks good ,,, if ur not feeling wright get another opinion,, jhee I dont remember the thyriod test she did ? if your truy need,,let me know & I will call and find out ..lots of health & luck to you sweetheart..
Thank you for the response. I plan on getting a second opinion prior to surgery. Right now the hyper symptoms are horrible I feel nervous an panicking almost all the time. It seems to settle down in the evenings. Someday I can't keep my eyes open. It's like a roller coaster ride I believe I go hyper then into hypo. I just want to feel good again. :(
I have not had the operation the goiter is slightly bigger. But, endo wanted to watch my levels till my next appointment in January and I was diagnosed with Hashimotos. I pretty much feel awful all the time, hairs still falling out, although my levels seem to be in the right range. I feel anxious as for hyperthyroidism I ain't lost weight. It's all so confusing.
Lupus and R.A are both Auto Immune diseases. They have nothing to do with your thyroid. In fact auto immune disorder can cause Hashimotos disease of the thyroid which causes nodules and goiters. So trust me you had Lupus before it was just never diagnosed cause your Dr's weren't looking for it. And if you had complications during your surgery it's because your goiter was so large.
Hello my name is Sandra i had my thyroid removed a year ago and my voice never came all the way back its a strain on me to talk for a while and iam gaining alot if weight and stay winded all the time now

Hello. First, yes I had my entire thyroid removed. Your questions are good.
The surgery is easy. Day surgery and goes well unless the goiter is causing extra problems. Your surgeon will let you know that part. I had very little pain with it. Tylenol took care of it.
As far as how you feel, the docs will give you a thyroid medicine that will give a normal amount for your body to respond to. You will be feeling very much better than you have for along time. Sometimes it has to be adjusted a while.
Weight gain is due to eating and is in your control. Because the medicine is putting you back to normal you will not be hypo or hyper. Just normal once you adjust to the med and take it as they prescribe. So no more hungry or less so than before the goiter.
Only adjustment I had was to remember to take it first thing each morning half an hour before you eat with a big glass of water. That is it.
Let me know if you have any questions. Good luck with the surgery.
Thank you so much for your response. I honestly just want to feel better I feel awful. The thought of loosing the thyroid all together is rather scarey but, living in a almost constant panic is horrible.
I just returned from being in the hospital with having my thyroid removed yesterday, My surgeon was GREAT!! Thats very important that you have a very expereinced surgeon. I had little pain. I am taking tyelnol. Do not take ibufben!!!
Throat is swollen, just a tad sore, but already feeling so much better before I went in for this removal. You are going to feel great! DO NOT FORGET TO TAKE YOUR PILL EVERy DAY!
Hey,wow i just saw your question and i just had all my thyroid taken out 3days ago.I also had a big goiter from one side of my neck to another.the surgery wasnt bad at all,it seemed so fast cause they put you to sleep.after the surgery trust me youll feel soooo much btr.its a really life changing moment, because your not feeling awful anymore.my suggestion to people who have to get it done..just do it youll see the difference.gud luck!!!
Hey.. Um
Is it true u gain so much weight if u hv goita?
I had mine removed. but I do have suggestion for meds. . The nurse told me if you wake up like around 4 or 5 to use restroom have your meds by your bed and take it then if you go back to sleep r whatever. your meds are taken and the 45 mins will pass faster
Im havein my thyroid op on the 3rd nov do u know if my eyes will go back to normal thay removein g all the tbyroid x
I was wondering after your removal duds the side you had removed start swelling up again?
I also had my thyroid removed and my weight gained started about 1-2 weeks after surgery. they did start the medication immediately after surgery but your body doesn't regulate that quick hence why my weight gain started. They're still trying to find the right dosage for me. I think our bodies are all different so while some regulated immediately after the tyroidectomy others may not. Just make sure you stay on top of it. See your endocrinologist if you feel the current dosage is. Not helping.
With hypothyroidism weight gain isome not just due to over eating. It can be caused caused by a very slow metabolism. I gained 50 lbs in a 3 month period without changing my eating habits.
